That's rumored to be the controller of the next generation CCC (Harman-Becker).

It's the new iDrive controller. All the BMW prototypes out there feature it.
New 7er, new Z4, new 5er, X1, F5 ...

I remember few spy shots where the knob and dedicated buttons can be seen partially. Z4 & F5 spy pics if I recall correctly.

Except the trim design (silver vs gray vs black parts) is slightly different here.

I can confirm "back" button for sure and several dedicated shortcut buttons yet function of those buttons can vary form model to model I guess.

F01 will be the first car to feature it.





I didn't know it would be available in old models as well. I guess in MY 2009 cars (09/2008).


Btw, this new controller is more in line with the original proposal - shown in Z9 GT Concept: yet there the button area & the knob were separated.

what's the point of carrying it over in a last year model of a 5er?
if indeed it will be implemented in existing models it just proves that there no major architectural changes to the underlying electronics as it would have been prohibitively costly if its implementation in an old model involved a major architectural change
