BMW's CFO Krause to unveil growth strategy for next few years in H2

05.16.07, 5:42 AM ET

FRANKFURT (Thomson Financial) - Bayerische Motoren Werke AG will unveil in the second-half of this year a road map of its growth strategy for the next few years, Chief Financial Officer Stefan Krause said in an interview with Swiss bi-weekly business newspaper Finanz und Wirtschaft.

'The board will in the second-half of this year give an answer to the capital market and the public with regard to their questions: Where is the BMW Group heading after reaching the 1.4 mln units (sales target this year), where will the next development come, where will profitable growth come from,' he said.

BMW has so far said it expects sales this year to be more than 1.4 mln vehicles compared with 1.373 mln units in 2006.

Krause said the road map will also 'describe how the development would proceed in the next few years and where we want the company to go.'

He said the road map would show to the capital market where the potential of the company lies.

Analysts have said BMW is in the midst of a strategy review and expected the results of the review to be disclosed sometime in July.

BMW’s CEO to unveil new strategy in October

BMW's CEO, Norbert Reithofer, will be laying out his new strategy in mid-October with a new 10-year plan. Reithofer’s primary objective is sustainable, profitable growth.

As BMW faces increasing competition from Audi, Lexus, Infiniti and Mercedes, along with strict CO2 regulations, the new strategy is expected to be more than just a five-year strategy.

“It makes sense that every five to six years that we reconsider our strategy,” he told Automobilwoche in an interview.

Reithofer says that he is open to joint ventures with rival auto makers in order reduce investment costs. BMW has previously said that it is considering partnering with rival DaimlerChrysler to build a small engine.

According to Reithofer, BMW may also look into a new line of business such as selling engines and other components.

Reithofer is expected to give a timeline on the development of the BMW X6 as well as hybrid plans based around the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid which it unveiled at Frankfurt.

BMW set to unveil new strategy: source

Wed Sep 26, 2:03 PM ET

FRANKFURT (AFP) - The German auto group BMW will present its strategy for the future on Thursday, a source close the matter told AFP, with press reports saying it would focus on improved production and cleaner cars. BMW boss Norbert Reithofer is to present the strategy to his supervisory board, the source said, confirming reports to appear Thursday in the magazine Capital and the daily Financial Times Deutschland.

A press conference in the southern city of Munich will follow, the source added.
When contacted by AFP, a BMW spokesman declined to comment.
The luxury car maker has pledged for several months to unveil a new strategy that is eagerly awaited by sector specialists.
Capital said the plan would concentrate on boosting productivity but did not call for major job cuts.
New technologies that should reduce auto pollution were also tipped to figure high on the agenda, according to the magazine, which did not identify its sources.
BMW, which also owns the Mini and Rolls-Royce brands, plans to launch several new models as well, including a Mini estate, a Mini four-wheel-drive, and a smaller Rolls-Royce to boost sales and lower carbon dioxide emissions, Capital said.
It added that the changes should allow the German automaker to sell 1.6 million units by 2009, a year ahead of schedule.
BMW sold a record 1.37 million vehicles last year and is targetting 1.4 million in 2007.
It also plans to increase production in the United States to help counter the effects of the euro's rise in value, and to churn out more of its iconic motorcycles.
BMW has battled for several years against rising commodity prices, the euro's increasing value against the dollar and yen, and the cost of developing "greener" vehicles, all of which have hurt its bottom line.

Re: BMW’s CEO to unveil new strategy in October

So from these press releases, so far we have:

- Cleaner cars
- Expanding product portfolio for BMW, Mini & Rolls Royce
- An increase in US-production due to rise in Euro
- BMW is open to joint-ventures with rival auto makers in order reduce investment costs
- And as shonguiz, another source is saying they are planning a fourth brand (where could they possibly squeeze a new brand in?)

So nothing earth-shattering about this new strategy?.. or will be there a big suprise or two? I'm getting nervous....

More on Thursday / Friday.

Currently BMW AG own inactive brands like Triumph and Riley.

Yet according to my info they are planing not to use neither of them, yet to purchase another currently inactive yet very well known & interesting brand. Introduction of a new "synthetic" brand (ala Lexus, Scion, smart) is highly unlikely.

Are BMW planning to purchase & revive Wartburg or Trabant brand?

Also: new production facilities in China & India (incl. for MINI models), MINI production outsourced (Magna Steyer?), possible engine plant in US, more efficient R&D + production (incl joint-ventures).

And the most intriguing part: the 4th brand. A possible surprise.

Like I said earlier: imagine eg. Wartburg or Trabant brand revival. Interesting scenario if true.

Re: BMW’s CEO to unveil new strategy in October

Just a quick summary on key points :

X1, Gran Turismo (a la Concept CS), PAS (Progressive Activity Sedan, MINI SAV und Rolls Ryce Coupe are planned until 2012. Another model will squeeze under the Phantom later.
The RFK will not be built.
The fourth brand seems to be postponed for the time being as none is filling the criteria required. But, a quick decision about purchasing could be done should the opportunity arise.
