Event Coverage: Bimmerfest 2007

In the realm of BMW enthusiast gatherings, Bimmerfest is king. For confirmation of this claim, one only needed to attend the 2007 event, held on May 5th at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barabara, California. When the gates opened at 9:00 AM to let the first cars through, the streets surrounding the show site were literally flooded with BMWs of all vintages.

The main show lot is said to hold 1600 cars, but certainly no fewer than 2000 passed through the gates during the course of the day. Visitors were eventually forced to park in overflow areas away from the main event, and even the show aisles were filled with double-parked participants. Aside from the show itself, numerous vendors were also on hand to answer questions about their products. Many were also making sales as well, with fairly generous show discounts being handed out.

Bimmerfest 2007 was dominated by 3 and 5 Series models, a vast majority of which appeared to have been hatched at the company's Motorsport workshop. And while the variety of newer cars may have been somewhat limited, the selection of vintage Bimmers was quite impressive. From showroom perfect to heavily modified, it seemed nearly every early generation of BMW coupe and sedan from the Sixties on was represented.

Bimmerfest is a truly Californian experience. For starters, most show organizers would kill for the kind of weather that makes Santa Barbara the perfect location for such a gathering. With sunshine all day and a light breeze, attendees simply relaxed and enjoyed the surroundings. In addition, California is where so many tuning and customizing trends get their start, and this show delivered. Numerous cars exhibited interior treatments from Louis Vuitton and Coach, as an example.

Bimmerfest 2008 promises to be an even more impressive show, assuming the venue can hold it. MWerks will be back next year for sure, and we may even drive out for it. For now, check out the extensive show galleries for a look at some of the more impressive machines.
