Post Audi TT Crowned Drive Car of the Year 2006 (Australia)

Audi TT crowned Drive Car of The Year 2006

, drive.com.au, 20/10/06

After six days and a combined 20,000km driving 48 cars, the Drive team voted for one overall winner of the inaugural Drive Car of the Year award. JOSHUA DOWLING recalls the late nights and long discussions that led to Audi's second-generation coupe getting the big vote.

LET'S BE CLEAR. The Drive Car of the Year award is not about comparing a $250,000 limousine with a $70k sports car or a $15,000 hatchback. Rather, it is how well each car rates against the judging criteria, and how well each fulfils its intended function.
Whichever car wins, the decision is always going to be controversial. If the judges had voted for a $15,000 car, some might wonder how such a vehicle could be superior to a $250,000 sedan laden with world-first safety features.
But if the award went to the most expensive car in the field, it might be considered irrelevant or out of reach to most buyers. Then again, if it makes significant gains in the automotive world, it should be praised for advancing the breed.
So, what made the Audi TT a deserving winner? To understand why we must look at the process.........
