Porsche wants to help develop RS-badged Audis

Autocar has learned that Porsche is considering reviving its close ties with Audi following the sports car maker’s takeover of the Volkswagen Group.

Well-place sources say that Porsche bosses are keen to restart the kind of engineering collaboration with Audi that produced the RS2 super-estate in the mid 1990s.

One of the first Audis in line for a Porsche makeover, once the company directors give the green light, is said to be the upcoming A5 Sportback, a more practical version of the A5 coupé with two more doors and a bigger boot.

By using the guts of the RS5, due out next year, Porsche and Audi could create a four-wheel-drive 4.2-litre V8 super-estate.

It may not be about raising power, either. With the RS5 tipped to produce 450bhp from the V8, Porsche may find other ways of improving performance, such as cutting weight.

Re: Porsche wants to help develop RS-badged Audis

Porsche probably only wants access to Audi's engines which is probably the only reason they would consider giving Audi a helping hand. The RS4 engine would be a demon under the hood of the Panamera and Porsche knows it.

Re: Porsche wants to help develop RS-badged Audis

I've got mixed feeling about this, ...

but question goes:

will it do more damage or be more helpful ?

What can Porscha do for Audi when Audi has Lamborghini ?
Will they make a Super team ?

Re: Porsche wants to help develop RS-badged Audis

As said many times before: Porsche is going after Audi's R&D resources, premium brands VAG owns, and the economy of scales VAG offers as a group - owning a bunch of economy brands (VW, Skoda, Seat). That's Porsche's interest in VAG.

Be sure when Porsche AG gains over 75% stake in VAG they will start to reorganize VAG. A Premium division will be formed (Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Bugatti), and will later be either moved directly under Porsche AG roof, or just being managed by Porsche people directly.

In few years Porsche will directly manage all the PAH premium brands: Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley, Bugatti. Making it world's best (and even biggest) premium carmaker. With all the benefits of VAG's economy of scale synergies.

So, BMW & MB better team up in the next 18 months unless ...

An automotive holding controlling brands like smart, MINI, BMW, Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz, Maybach, and Aston Martin (in not so distant future) would be a nice counterbalance to expanded Porsche AG.

It would be interesting to see what will happen to Opel & Saab when GM bankrupts. I can see both brands being acquired by a German automotive company. Being that PAH SE (PAG + VAG), or BMW AG / Daimler AG (or even eg. Aqton SE).

We shall see ... But I can see some tectonic moves in German automotive industry in the next 2 years. PAH SE consolidation just being one of them.

Re: Porsche wants to help develop RS-badged Audis

No, Porsche Automobil Holding will ruin BMW & MB --- if they don't act & team up.

Porsche SE already owns 100% of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, and de facto 74.1% of Volkswagen AG (and the share is increasing daily - since the goal is to obtain at least 75% of VAG). This makes Porsche SE on of the most formidable & successful carmaker in the world. And the reorganization of VAG (by Porsche model) has not even begun ...
