Audi V6 3.0 TFSI: First ever compressor engine in Audi history!

The new Audi V6 3.0 TFSI which will be featured first in the new Audi A6, and we hear Audi S4 as well, will be Audi's first ever compressor engine ever instead of a turbocharger!

The Audi V6 3.0 TFSI will deliver 290 bhp and consume in average 9.5l per 100 km and AMS is calling it already a "great achievement", just based on their figures.

The Audi V6 3.0 TFSI will be featured also in other models from Audi A4 and above.

"Only" 290hp? not enough to take on BMW's TT I6 IMO.

i find it quite odd by audi, while all major constructors are phasing out superchargers in favor of the more complex but more efficient and less destructive turbochargers, they come late to the game and develop yesterday's tech
and the result seems underated as well, 290hp for a superchared 3.0 is not much, it might have an interesting torque curve but i think it's not enough

What I don't understand is why is Audi calling it TFSI and not CFSI or KFSI?

It has 25hp more than the 3.2 FSI. It's a decent improvement, less displacement is favorable for the fuel consumptions.

With force inductions there are no limits. If Audi wanted to they could have squeezed out more power but they probably want the engine to feel like an NA which is why they have added huge super chargers resulting in 350hp or so. I suspect the super charger was for adding more torque while gaining some HP as well.

Re: Audi V6 3.0 TFSI: First ever compressor engine in Audi history!

This is rather strange move by Audi..to use compressor instead of turbochargers is quite atypical move.Hmmm, something strange is going on here..but I don´t have any doubt that this will be good engine..just not as good as BMW 3.0 TT engine,I think.

Is Audi going to discontinue the 3.2 FSI engine?

Re: Audi V6 3.0 TFSI: First ever compressor engine in Audi history!

The rumours appear to have been right. I seriously doubted this move from Audi and it looks like I've been proven wrong. I hate that.

Anyhoo, daft move IMO from Audi, V6's are actually very nicely suited to turbocharging - if BMW could achieve such spectacular results from their twin-turbo arrangement from such low, low rpm - why couldn't Audi as one of the Germans' leading exponents of turbo technology?

Technically speaking turbocharged arrangements are less mechanically complex than supercharged ones. They're also less efficient because they require a certain percentage of engine power (and hence fuel and emissions) in order to work. A turbo does generates increased inlet volume for "free" by using the otherwise wasted exhaust gas energy. A perplexing and mildly disappointing development from Audi - the supposed leaders in turbocharged mainstream cars.

Re: Audi V6 3.0 TFSI: First ever compressor engine in Audi history!

The article says the engine is much more compact in design than a turbocharged V6 engine would be.

I guess that's the catch.

Turbocharged V6 is a dimension monster, and perhaps could not fit into new Audi modular platform & drivetrain arrangement resulting in better weight & overhangs distribution.

I guess they did try to do with their V6 exactly what BMW has done with their V8: putting all the turbo-stuff in the space between the V blocks, but the solution wasn't good enough - so they went for a compacter compressor engine.

I hardly believe the argument they found "compressor superior to turbocharged engine" - since the trend is in turbo-tech. Which is also cheaper & less complex. And Audi has excellent know-how in designing turbo engines.

IMO the limitation is the new platform / drivetrain arrangement, which requires a compacter (lighter?) engine to deliver all the new platform / drivetrain benefits.

But I can be wrong though.
