German Auto Motor und Sport has the latest news that Audi will feature a supercharged 3.0T engine in the new Audi S4, upcoming Audi A6 and most probably Audi Q5 and Audi Q7 as well, here's a quick translation of their German text.

As expected at the Vienna Motor Symposium, Audi announced plans to introduce a new supercharged V6 engine. It is intended first for the refreshed A6 and also for the next-generation S4.

The previous S4 made us of a powerful 344-hp normally aspirated 4.2 V8. This new engine will be used in Europe and North America and will be good for 350 hp in the S4.

Despite similar levels of power to the old V8, the new V6 consumes significantly less fuel. It will be combined with a sports differential from Magna, which will also later be used in Q5 and S5 models.

The new Audi S4 is expected shortly after the A6 this autumn. For the A6, the new supercharged V6 engine will be implemented at the same time as a new facelift and will produce 290 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque in the A6 application.

So if it is supercharged, where is there a ''T'' after 3.0? Is the engine going to have the twin charger layout like the VW 1.4 TSFI engines?

No twincharger just a Supercharger or Kompressor if you like to call it.
3.0TFSI is a marketing name it only indicates that it's forged induction.

TFSI is not a just a marketing moniker - it is intended to denote "Turbocharged Fuel Stratified Injection". In the same way, TSI was intended to denote "Twincharged Stratified Injection" in all engines featuring a supercharger, turbocharger combination.

I find all of this talk about supercharged Audi's to be grossly speculative and, if true, most irritating. Why would VW/Audi - world leaders in the combination of direct injection and turbocharging technology suddenly pursue supercharging (solely) as a means of forced induction? It's non-sensical.

If the next S4 is, in fact, a TSI'd engine then boy-oh-boy I wanna see the plumbing for that induction system! In my opinion TSI and sequential turbocharged arrangements are well suited only to in-line engines.

Thanks martin, I got mixed up between TFSI and TSI. There are just too many technical jargon floating around. Speaking of the TSI engines, does anyone have any technical cut-away drawings for the current 1.4 TSI engine?

By the way, TSI means in finnish the same as DIY means in english. "So you got a new Golf DIY?"

I have a feeling this news is fake/innaccurate TBH.

actualy it might be true. sequintial turbo after super chargeing has ben done but not very a fuitfull endever. i would give oudi props for trying but i dont thank i would got for that combo. it might be a little space saveing compaired to sequintial turbos. but with borgwarners new sequintial veriable geomitry turbos out now and able to combine with patrol gas. stt would be my couice. i would love to have vgt teck with audi

Audi has revealed more details about its forthcoming supercharged V6 engine, which will power the next S4 and feature in next year’s A6 refresh.

The 3.0-litre, direct-injection unit produces 286bhp at 4850rpm, and 310lb ft torque at 2500rpm. It’ll be known as the 3.0-litre TFSI, even though the ‘T’ traditionally stands for ‘turbo’.

The new engine uses an Eaton supercharger and has an air-to-air intercooler rather than a water-to-air unit.

Speculation was rife that Audi would fit its 3.2-litre V6 with twin turbos in an effort to rival BMW’s similarly specified 3.0-litre unit, which has just won Engine of the Year for the second year in succession. But the Ingolstadt engineers decided that the increasing weight of cars demanded a solution promising greater torque at low revs.

Audi bosses believe that larger models like the Q7 and A8 - also likely to get the supercharged V6 - will benefit from low-down power delivery. Packaging a supercharger is also simpler than a twin-turbo, because it sits between the cylinders, although this does raise the centre of gravity.
