Audi Ranks at the Top for Employee Health

• Audi is an attractive employer: quick return to work following absence
• Audi Checkup preventative health program draws 90 percent participation

With a 97.0 percent employee attendance rate at its German plants in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm, Audi ranked at the top of the automobile industry in 2007 for the state of health of all the company’s employees. This means that the carmaker had a short-term and long-term absenteeism rate due to illness of no more than three percent as of mid-2007. The brand with the four rings therefore exceeded the average for the Federal Republic of Germany.

“Good jobs promote good health,” says Dr. Werner Widuckel, Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG for Human Resources. “Interesting duties, a management culture that values employees and a good working climate are crucial here. The above-average state of employee health confirms our employees’ high motivation and dedication to their work.”

Audi significantly surpassed its competitors in terms of employee health in the area of production in particular. Audi maintains individual employment reintegration programs for employees who have been absent for longer terms. The development work for new cars includes the design of the workplace, which follows high ergonomic standards.

The “Audi’s Future” agreement concluded between company executives and the company works council excludes the possibility of layoffs until 2011. Employee fear of losing their jobs therefore was not a factor in achieving the high attendance rates. “It’s due to the self-motivation of the employees to return to their jobs quickly,” explains Dr. Joachim Stork, Director of Audi Health Care Services. “The sense of being acknowledged and valued for your work leads to quicker recovery.”

Audi consistently pursues a goal of maintaining and promoting the health and fitness of all employees. One element of the holistic and systematic health management at Audi is the Audi Checkup. This preventative health program is offered to all employees on a no-cost and voluntary basis. It allows them to assess and recognize their state of health and risks early on. Employees receive a state-of-the-art medical examination result which is consolidated into a health profile. In the past year, 6,700 checkups were performed at the plants in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm. “The 90 percent rate of participation confirms the outstanding response from employees. They particularly value the intensive consultation, which they have really embraced,” Stork comments. “This year we’re hoping for 11,000 checkups at both German locations. After all, we rely on the health and well-being of our employees just as much as on their professional expertise and social competence.”
