Audi RS cars...

Just a passing thought... but do you guys think RS cars should replace the S car line or not? There are two sides to this: As it is RS cars are very exclusive and ultra competitive high performance cars w/ the S line merely and woefully complementing them. The downside to the present startegy is that the RS cars are produced in very small numbers, and the S car line, which is around for an extended period of time, given their earlier intro, are not very competitive w/ the oppisition from MB and BMW. Both makes turning out cars w/ significanltly larger performance numbers. The other side to this(IMO, the more idealistic upshot of the two), is a proposed idea out of my own head, of course. RS cars could completely replace the S line and offer the higher level, more competitive performance, eye catching design. This would probably be more for Quattro Gmbh, as they would have increased productivity and become more competitive as a brand w/ in a brand. Perhaps wishful thinking, but who knows... Audi could be watching....

Re: Audi RS cars...

I say keep the current S + RS setup. I like the option of having an Audi with mild-high-performance and a track-ready firebreather all based on the same model. I like that. The S4 Cabriolet is a particularly sweet car, but it wouldn't make much sense in RS4 trim, leave that to sedan and wagon, or just the sedan. There will likely be a S6 Sedan on the Audi stand in Detroit in a few weeks (I'll be there!) and a RS6 is likely too, but only as a sedan I think. The S6 will be in sedan and wagon form and leave the best perform body configuration to the RS trim, the sedans, IMO.

The RS also gives Audi the chance to make some truly exclusive cars because lets fact it AMG, M and S cars aren't really all that rare anymore.

I think they should scrap the S-lineup becasue it really annoys me. When a S-car is presented I get excited but at the same time not becasue the cars are usually under powered and the fact that there is a RS-car around the corner make the S-car kind of boring.
If Audi is ketting the S-lineup they should present the models shortly after presenting the car itself so that we don't have to wait almost a year for an under powered high performing cars.

Absolutely right. I want to see RS cars with more power and more often. Forget S-line, it's all or nothing!

Re: Audi RS cars...

if they keep the S-line it like Audi is not even fully devoting themselves since you know there is a better car out there...the RS's..

Re: Audi RS cars...

BRING IT ONG AUDI!!!! GET RID OF THE S AND LEAVE THE RS. THROW IT AWAY! THROW IT AWAY! THROW IT AWAY!

Lets be serious here. Why have an S division so that when you create an RS version you have to make it more expensive. Why not just have RS lower the price that they sell for now, while making them a little bit more expensive than the S line obviously! and make them fast, sexy, powerful and cheaper than its competitors. THAT IS ONE SUCCESS FORMULA THERE IF YOU ASK ME

Re: Audi RS cars...

I think they should keep both the S and the RS lines. You might have heard me before, the difference in the cars is surely not just in their power outputs. You only think you're getting ripped off (by the earlier release of the S versus the RS versions) if you think in terms of the power. So what? It's the character of the car that is more important, both in the driving style and the interior appointments.

The S lineups are powerful cars for people who like that, but in a more discreet (one of the reasons I like Audi in the first place is that their styling and branding is already more discreet than Mercedes' and BMW's) and still somewhat comfort oriented package. The RS lineup is as much of a performance car as any, really, and suitable enough for the track as almost any production car, although I would really say that no roadgoing car is ready for the track straight from the showroom floor.

I suppose I partly echo what Merc1 said, only that I think wagons also have an essential part to play in the lineup, even as RS versions - wagons are apparently far more popular in Europe than in many places, America and Australia included. It makes sense for them to have those cars there, as much sense as a M5 Touring makes.

I think that playing to the MB and BMW paradigm of having only one 'upmarket performance version' is unnecessary and possibly even silly. Why play their game, whether with more bang for the buck, outright lower prices, or otherwise? Cynics may say that it's dooming Audi to failure to play the established brands' game on their own turf, but I say that despite that, it's a matter of principle. Audi should just do their own thing.

The only suggestion I would make is to speed up the development for the RS models. Maybe it serves the purpose of keeping up interest in whatever particular model range, but nobody wants to wait that long, really. Anyhow, I am of the opinion that both the RS and the S models have a significant part to play in Audi's range.
