Audi Score High With Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports has recently announced their choice of the best carmakers that build the best cars and leading the pack is Volkswagen together with its luxury unit Audi. They are followed by Honda, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Mazda, and Nissan. In the aspect of reliability the carmakers that scored high include Honda, Subaru, and Toyota. Mercedes last in reliability survey

Mercedes-Benz has been walloped in a US reliability study that puts it last among the 36 brands evaluated.

The blow came in the annual reliability study conducted by Consumer Reports magazine, published by the non-profit Consumers Union.

‘‘We have seen a fairly rapid decline in reliability for Mercedes over the past five years,’’ says David Champion of Consumer Reports. ‘‘To put it in perspective, a 1998 Lexus LS400 would likely have less problems last year than a brand new2006 ML500.’’

The magazine praised Mercedes vehicles for their handling and noted the maker was ‘‘a safety leader’’. But given the reliability rating, the magazine said it could not recommend buying one. This year Consumer Reports’ frequency-of-repair survey got information from its subscribers on 1.3 million vehicles from the 1997 to 2006 model years.

Mercedes spokeswoman Donna Boland strongly disputes the findings. ‘‘We had some issues a few years back but that’s behind us.

There’s been a lot of work behind the scenes these past two years on both sides of the Atlantic to deliver on our commitment to return Mercedes quality to the top,’’ she says.

BMW and Volkswagen also fared poorly, finishing 19th and 27th respectively. Toyota topped the survey, followed by Honda, Lexus and Subaru.
