Cadillac is the oldest automobile manufacturer to originate in Detroit, Michigan. The company is named after the French explorer who founded the city. General Motors purchased Cadillac in 1909 and that same year Cadillac produced almost 6,000 vehicles. Over six million vehicles had been built by the end of the 1970s; Cadillac celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2002.

The first Chevrolet automobile was the Classic Six, produced in 1911. The first Chevrolet truck was produced in 1918, the same year the automaker was purchased by General Motors. In 1927 Chevrolet became America's best-selling nameplate, selling over one million cars.

The Chrysler Corporation began as the Maxwell Motor Corporation, which Walter P Chrysler took control to help it out of bankruptcy. He founded the Chrysler Corporation in 1925. In November 1998 Chrysler became a division of DaimlerChrysler AG, created by a merger between Daimler-Benz AG and the Chrysler Corporation. In 2007 Chrysler split from Daimler to become Chrysler LLC. Chrysler Group LLC was formed after the restructuring of its financing in June 2009.

Dodge was founded by John and Horace Dodge, who began manufacturing bicycles in 1899. In 1910 the Dodge brothers set out to become the biggest auto parts manufacturers, and in 1914 they unveiled the first Dodge car. Dodge cars and trucks became known for their ruggedness, and in 1928 Dodge was purchased by the Chrysler Corporation

Founded in 2005 by Henrik Fisker, Fisker Automotive is headquartered in Irvine, California. Currently, their sole product, the Fisker Karma, is intended to go on sale in June 2010. The car features a plug-in hybrid technology they call "Quantum Drive", developed by Quantum Technologies.

Founded by Henry Ford and incorporated on June 16, 1903. The company created the popular Model T in 1908. Ford produced its one-millionth vehicle in 1915, and introduced the first Ford truck two years later. In addition to producing Lincoln and Mercury vehicles, Ford owns a controlling stake in Volvo and retains an interest in financing, parts and service, and car rental.

AM General Corp. was established by American Motors Co. (AMC) in 1971. In 1983 The U.S. government awarded them a contract to build its High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), or Humvee, for military use. In 1992 AM General introduced a civilian version of the HMMWV, the HUMMER. General Motors and AM General reached an agreement in December 1999, in which GM acquired exclusive ownership of the HUMMER brand name worldwide. In 2009 GM sold the HUMMER brand rights to China's Sichuan Tengzhong. AM General continues to own and build the original, military HMMWV.

Founded in 1941, Jeep is the oldest off-road vehicle (also sport utility vehicle – SUV) brand, with Land Rover coming in second. The original vehicle which first appeared as the prototype Bantam BRC became the primary light 4-wheel-drive vehicle of the US Army and allies during the World War II and postwar period. Jeep is an automobile marque (and registered trademark) of Chrysler.

Mosler Automotive is an American supercar manufacturer based in Riviera Beach, Florida. It was founded in 1985 by Warren Mosler. It currently produces the MT900R racer and the street-legal MT900S.

Tesla was founded in 2003 and is headquartered in San Carlos, California, a city in the region known as Silicon Valley. Tesla opened its first retail store in West Los Angeles, Calif., in April 2008.
