My first post hi all !!

I've been visiting this site almost every week since it started and have read many of your comments with interest, smome with amusement and the odd one with disgust - I guess now that i have finally decided to register you will most of mine in the same way hopefully less of the disgust.

The A8 is one of my favourite cars is it was hard not to rate it with full marks!!

I've driven both the new A8 4.2 and the old S8 and if the new car is truly an improvement over either (which is saying ALOT) then I gotta give the new S8 a top score even if I've never driven it.

I like the car, but I think Audi has missed what the competition is doing. With other German marques now in the 500 horsepower range and even the Lexus soon to offer 430hp, Audi needs to up the power numbers to play effectively in this market environment. Secondly, why only offer the S8 in a short wheelbase ? Mercedes S55/S65 are all long wheel base vehicles and people who spend this kind of money want fast and big.

Well, as we tread further and further up into the horsepower counts, we fail to stop and 'smell the roses'. 400bhp is a whole lot of power already to contend with, and it's more than enough for a large luxury sedan like the S8 - with 450bhp. I feel that it's more of what the power can do for the car (in terms of handling, ride, FC, etc... more power doesn't mean these get better) rather than in actual solid numbers: besides the S8 does 0-100km/h in 5+/- seconds... It's already very good imo.

On top of that, I'm sure they wouldn't want to make the S8 ultra-expensive by fitting it with more power... It competes very effectively with the S63/65 at a much lower price to begin with.

If the S8 isn't offered a LWB version then it's ludicrous... But as far as I know they'll allow it.

I actually agree with you more than my post may have indicated. My "racing" days are limited to long entrance ramps on expressways, so personally 400 horsepower is quite enough. With that being said, I am more referring to Audi's desire to fully penetrate the Mercedes/BMW market. Audi has done much with their gorgeous interiors, but the horsepower "number" is a key part of the product. Most people who spend the additional $25k (USD) for an S55 never utilize the power potential of the vehicle, but more for what the AMG package portends. The "65" series Mercedes is a diifferent animal entirely, more comparable with other $180k (USD) Bentley's. I'll say it again. Mercedes has 500hp, BMW has 500hp and if Audi wants to be a player on this field, they need 500hp.

Regarding the long wheelbase S8, which by the way, I think is a great idea with the Lambo engine, is not available in the US, except in the shorter version.
