That 0-200 is not too impressive for such a powerful car. I don't know what AMS got for M5, but sport auto has it at 13.8. The slalom speed is not impressive either.

Re: AMS review + 0-200km/h time = Audi RS6 Avant - 03-19-2008, 04:56 AM

Damn, the weight of the RS6 Avant really drags that beast down considering the HP advantage it has over the M5 Touring.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't AMS clock the E60 M5 Touring at 14.8s for the 0-200km/h dash ..and the E63 Estate hit 200km/h after 15.3 seconds?

Power output
M5 Touring: 507hp
RS6 Avant: 580hp
E63 Estate: 514hp

Curb Weight
M5 Touring: 1,995kg
RS6 Avant: 2,025kg (Official Audi figure, not AMS weight)
E63 Estate: 1,840kg

Power-to-Weight Ratio (hp/100kg)
M5 Touring: 25.4hp/100kg
RS6 Avant: 28.6hp/100kg
E63 Estate: 27.9hp/100kg

So of these three, the M5 Touring has the lowest power-to-weight ratio, yet manages to do 0-200km/h faster than both RS6 Avant and E63 Estate. Can anyone explain how the M5 Touring managed this, and more importantly why the RS6 Avant's superior power-to-weight ratio (~13% better than the M5 Touring) didn't translate into the fastest time for the 0-200km/h test?

Remember this is the only time so far. More will come and that 0-200km/h time will change from test to test.

I heard that next issue of Sportauto there will be a RS6 vs M5 Touring comparison.

Lower drag + better transmission (gearing + shifting speed) maybe ?!

A more efficient drive line (7speed SMG vs automatic transmission and RWD vs AWD).

I always wondered if Audi went for such a huge leap in HP over the competition cause they wanted to put the RS6 way over the top compared to the competition or cause the car actually needed all that power to beat M5 - it is looking more like it is the latter.

I agree. Audis always seem to need way more power for even the slightest performance gains over AMG and M competitors.

Automatic and AWD steal weight.
Audi need more power than the competition to be as fast or faster, this I have been saying for years.

Re: AMS review + 0-200km/h time = Audi RS6 Avant - 03-19-2008, 06:10 AM

I agree.
The E63 looses some hp because of the auto (torque converter, weight, slower gearchange), however the new MCT should make things better on future models.

The RS6 has the same kind of auto tranny, and has the heavy and hp-eater AWD system.

So despite the different power output, the three achieve quite similar performances. Which is of course deceiving for the extremely powerful Audi.
