To my eye, the resemblance, between the A5 and A4 is purely at a detail level, whereas the actual shape and proportion of the cars is vastly different. | | | | | Contributor

Wooo, I knew you'd bring out the big guns with that A4 Cabrio example. It's quite simple; at the time there wasn't an A5, the A4 was clearly the base model for a long-awaited Cabrio that skipped a generation with the B5. So, when you look at an A4 Cabrio its donor is unmistakeable - especially considering that A4 Cabrio has the front of an A4 grafted onto a cabrio. The A5 shares nothing with the A4 whatsover in terms of sheetmetal.
I'm willing to bet that there won't be an A4 Cabrio. There'll be an Avant for sure, but the Cabrio will be based off the A5. To me that makes plenty sense.
| Dear Martin.
Of course there will be no A4 Cabrio anymore, because the new cabrio will be called A5, and will be a coupe (same styling) with a folding roof - since cabrios are usually based on coupes, not sedans.
Regarding A4 Coupe: it was already there in the previous generations (except B6 & B7). And also had "unspecific Audi roof line". But styling wise it was a carbon copy of A4 sedan.
Yes, A5 comes with a a bit different styling than A4, but is the difference strong enough to justify a separate label?
You say yes, I say no.
I also wonder: will A5 family consist of coupe & cabrio variants only, or Audi will offer other variants as well (eg. A5 Sportback, A5 4dr coupe, A5 cross-over etc)? | | | | | Global Moderator

I really couldn't care what they decide to name this vehicle, but for the sake of discussion - regardless of the differences between the two models or lacktherof (depending on what you think) - is it not a logical descision when it comes to marketing? After all, the name "A5" is new, shiny and unheard of, while "A4" is a name which most Audi enthusiasts are now familar with.
I think that from a marketing stand point branding the vehicle with a new badge was smart. | | | | | Aficionado

I definitely think that the A5 deserves the seperate label and the main reason is this: Quote: |

Yeah, we marketing guys are usually full of BS. But it seems most people like BS.
Therefore BMW are selling SAVs instead SUVs, MB 4dr coupes instead of sedans, and tourers instead of (mini-)vans. RR offers Drophead Coupe instead of Convertible. And Audi A5 instead of A4 coupe (same with BMW's X6 = X5 coupe). Etc. Numerous examples out there.
Viva la marketing.
Just like the cosmetics industry: packing a product in a new packaging, changing the fragrance, and then claiming with big mouths: NEW FORMULA! Yeah, sure. | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to EnI For This Useful Post: | | | Devotee

I´m pretty sure that Audi intented A5 to be an seperate model to begin with..Now,when I see new A4(B8),I can´t tell that is the case .They look like egg to an egg IMO.That fact isn´t to be considered to be wrong or bad, whatever, but it is still a fact.In fact,I like both models, really,But,is it deserve separate label,I would say NO.A4 Coupe sounds more like it,and I don´t see anything wrong about it . | | | | | GCZ's High Court

Absolutely. It's definitely a stand alone model. | | | | |
