Literally, the amount of money I person pay for Health Insurance per month, I could have me a decently equipped 335i. So keeping many things into account, cars might be cheaper on paper, but when it comes to financing and wages here, cars are still expensive. Don't even get me started on car insurance in this country.

Not to mention the living expenses. Barely none of the people I knew in the O.C had their own apartment, everyone was sharing with at least one other person. so for those of you thinking that cars in the US are cheap, imagine having a normal job with a wage of $9.76/h working 40 hour a week making a total of $1 561.6 a month.

All that money has to be used for paying off a decent 2 room apartment with a $1 200 rent. That only leaves 361.6 left for a cell phone plan, gas, water/electricity, laundry, car loan payment, car insurance, gas, health insurance and food off course.

Living expenses in California are very high compared with Sweden, especially when it comes to rents. You pay a whole lot more over there and get much less for your money.

When I read M3post.com I get the impression that the average M3 owner are between 20-30 years old, thats young age for driving a new M3.
Are many American youngsters willing to sacrifice other important things just to be able to drive a fancy car?

and insurance is high in Sweden too, my dad drive a BMW as well but he pay a high insurance costs although he is 57 years old. Just insane what insurance companies steal from us.

Most of the guys on M3 post are a part of a minority i.e young and very successful.

In general cars are a status symbol in the US and the car industry is major. There are youngsters who live in a shoe box but drive a Chrysler 300C. You can buy a brand car without putting down a dollar and pay $199 a month. Dealers are very competative and the banks are generous with loans and credits. Many people live in debt.

Luw is right. Most of the folks are in debt. Most of those guys in M3 post are HUGE minority (oxymoron, yes, I know). I've been out to quite a few meets here in cali. Most of the owners are usually in their early 30s and onwards. Most of the young crowd can be broken up into 3 segments:

1. Got good grades, got a nice degree and got a high paying job - usually not married.
2. Rich kids whose parents will buy them anything.
3. Live in appartment/parent house, has a normal job, spends all the money on car and saves none.

When I had my M3...I fell into the #3 category. I'd rather not be in debt and have an OK car than be in an ocean of debt and have a nice car. currently, I'm somewhere in the middle...LOL
