During the latest years the S4 has been an odd model stuck in no man's land in terms of pricing. Very expensive but not as powerful as the RS4 and M3. BMW has made a lot of money under cutting the S4 by releasing the 335i which offers plenty of power at a reasonable price. Audi has off course noticed that which is a reason why they would "down grade" the S4 to the same level.

Not to happy about that, but I'm sure people would go for the S4 anyway
1. because it will be dam good looking
2. The power and performance
3. the 335i is ugly
All Audi need to do is keep the price reasonable price, not too much more than the 335i and there on a win

I was expecting the S4 to be a beast, but it could be good..As long as the Rs4 is out of this world, I'll stop complaining about the S4

Car and Driver - 2010 Audi S4 to Get Supercharged V6

Those who assumed the 2010 Audi S4 would share its powertrain with the S5 appear to be incorrect. Instead, look for an all-new forced-induction 3.0-liter V-6 that will generate something close to the 340 horsepower found in the outgoing S4’s 4.2-liter V-8.

Why is the Audi S4 moving from a V-8 to a V-6, just as the BMW M3 moved from an inline-six to a V-8? In two words: Fuel economy. Audi’s strategy is to deliver comparable or improved overall performance by toeing the line on weight and maintaining power output by using forced induction on a smaller displacement engine.

The new V-6 also will be the base offering in the A6 Quattro, replacing the 3.2-liter V-6. Known as TFSI, which in the past has been Audi’s internal moniker for four-cylinder turbos, the new engine may be referred to as the 3.0T in the model name, possibly indicating a twin-charged system using both a supercharger and a turbocharger. While Volkswagen has a “twincharger,” Audi has not yet offered such a system. At the very least, we expect the new V-6 to be supercharged.

Don’t look for a dramatically lower weight in this S4. Compared with the outgoing 2008 A4, the redesigned 2009 A4’s body is approximately 10 percent lighter. The A4 and S4 will use identical sheetmetal this time around—the new S4 apparently was not developed by Audi's high-performance division, Quattro GmbH, but the S4 will be distinguished by having distinct cladding from the A4. Not only does the sharing save money, but stresses the exclusivity of the RS 4 which will better stand out with its distinct sheetmetal—including bulging fenders—and a V-8.

A trick differential like the one in the BMW X6 adds about 40 pounds. We expect to see Audi roll out its Magna-sourced “sport differential” (BMW uses ZF) in the S5 and Q5 as well, to combat understeer in its four-wheel-drive vehicles.

The supercharger will make the V-6 weigh about the same as the V-8 overall. Add in the requisite safety and luxury features that every new model gets, and it’s a wash. Expect Audi to claim a nominal weight reduction of only 20–100 pounds for the new model, putting it at about 3900 pounds.

Audi will debut the 2010 S4 this fall sometime after the 2008 Paris show in October—making the L.A. show in November a possibility. Expect the new S4 to compete with the BMW 335i for efficiency but the Audi probably won’t have the edge in performance and will cost significantly more. Watch for more details on the new S4’s engine in the coming days.

Ughh... why supercharging instead of turbocharging? Supercharging doesn't increase efficiency or fuel mileage the way turbocharger does. The only advantage of the supercharging over turbocharging was turbo lag which is really thing of the past with modern turbo technology.

The article is wrong. The 3.0 lt TFSI V6 engine will have two turbos and not a supercharger.

And that won't necessarily constitute an S4 variant either... Could just be a top of the line model in the cooking A4 range.

Re: New Audi S4 Thread (Spy pics, info & rumours)

This next-generation Audi S4 could be the super-saloon that ends the German power wars.
Our spies have caught the 2010 S4 undergoing high-speed testing at the Nurburgring and sources suggest that there’s a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 under the bonnet instead of the current model’s V8.
Insiders tell us that Audi wants to reduce the weight and improve the fuel economy of its new S4, while offering performance that’s on a par with the current models.
Meanwhile, it looks as though the range-topping RS4, likely to arrive in 2011, will retain its V8 in an effort to separate the appeal of the two variants.
Audi sees the new S4 as a rival for the likes of BMW’s 335i while the next RS4 will take the fight to the M3.

Re: New Audi S4 Thread (Spy pics, info & rumours)

Grrr... there's that darned supercharging rumour again.

Again, this thread ought to be merged with that other one (I think there are actually more than just one) discussing the same issue of supercharging the S4. I'm too lazy to go and look for it properly.

Update:Following the launch of the updated S5 coupe with a seven-speed DSG, Audi has confirmed the S4 will be getting the same twin-clutch S-tronic transmission found in its sport-coupe sibling. Additional information adds further weight to the confirmation we received just over a month ago on the S4’s 350hp supercharged V6 and updated platform.

At 142kg, the new dual-clutch transmission is 40kg heavier than the previous manual. Straight-line performance may actually improve, however, since the unit manages shifts in just 200ms - much quicker than any human. The extra weight could hurt transitional performance, but it is located low and at the center of the car’s mass, so it will have as little effect as physically possible. The weight gain should be offset by savings in other areas, including the lighter engine anyway, so the result should be a net benefit to performance compared to the old model.

Performance for the new S4 is fitting for a car with the S badges: 155mph top speed and 0-60mph in less than six seconds. As the spy shots below show the car’s exterior design is already essentially finalized, and now the powertrain is coming together, so it’s clearly due for a debut soon. The Paris show in October is the most likely choice.

Original: Vienna’s International Motor Symposium has been a showcase for the latest in powertrain development for nearly 30 years and with the close of this year’s event last week has come some interesting information about the next-generation Audi S4 sedan. The new car is expected to sport a supercharged V6 in place of the current model’s 340hp (250kW) V8.

Original reports of the V6 S4 were based on unconfirmed sources, but it turns out they were accurate. The company has yet to release official details and specifications for the new engine, but our German colleagues at Auto Motor und Sport report that the announcement was in fact made in Vienna and that the upcoming S4 would be powered by a 350hp (257kW) 3.0L supercharged V6.

Advantages of the new package include lighter weight, greater fuel economy and equal or greater power - all of which should translate into better performance. The new V6-powered S4 isn’t due until the 2010 model year.

Also in the Vienna announcement was news that Audi’s A6 would receive a somewhat detuned version of the force-fed V6, generating 290hp (215kW) and 420Nm of torque.
