Re: New engines for A4.

Hmph, closely stacked TFSI engine range eh?

160 PS / 118 kW
180 PS / 132 kW
210 PS / 154 kW (not much of an improvement over 147 kW it must be said)

Seems plausible but rather bold from Audi to offer such a broad spread of engines. What's BMW got?

318i with 105 kW
320i with 125 kW
325i with 160 kW
330i with 200 kW

Hmmm, a better spread I think for BMW. Audi buyers will be spoilt for choice. One huge advantage of turbocharging; differently tuned outputs from the same engine. Gives huge flexibility to the marketing department.

When are Merc's turbo'd fours mooted for?

No I didn't - including the 3.2 V6 may have been verbose. We all know it's there...

I was pointing out specifically how closely stacked the engine outputs were in the 4 cylinder turbo range of engines.

I merely used the 330i engine as a reference point to show how engine power output spread in the BMW 3er range is broader and more consistently spaced:

318i <-- 20 kW --> 320i <-- 35 kW --> 325i <-- 40 kW --> 330i.

Audi by comparison:

1.8 160 PS <-- 14 kW --> 2.0 180 PS <-- 22 kW --> 2.0 210 PS <-- 41 kW --> 3.2 V6

All in all, a bit cluttered down at the 4 cylinder TFSI model range. A mere 36 kW separates the 3 models down from 2.0 TFSI 210 thru to the 1.8 TFSI 160. Pretty much the gap between the 325i and the 320i (35 kW between just two models). Now, some people will see this as an advantage and very typical of Audi's "plug-em gaps" strategy but I feel that Audi would've been better off dropping one of the engines and focusing rather on injecting value into other features and specifications.

But ok, fair's fair - I should have included the 3.2 V6 for perspective's sake...

Yeah, where is that engine now? In development I surely hope. It would be great to have that engine in the A4/A5. Then they can drop the current S5 V8, make the new RS5 an S5 and 1-up that with an uber engine (V10 maybe) in the RS5

Audi has some great engines going on. MB better fellow and offer a better engine line up for the C-class.

Does anyone know when in 2008 we can expect to see S-Tronic in the A4?

Re: New engines for A4.

I just hope they follow BMW's High-End diesels. I mean just look at the 320d 177hp, 4.8l/10km, 0-100km/h in 7.9sec, there is no other car on the planet that can match these figures.

These two should be affordable...
