Very interesting cut-away illustration of the new clutch, gearbox and off-set differential arrangment. In this case we're looking at a Multitronic CVT transmission (the linked plate chain and variator components are unmistakable) for a front-wheel drive car.
I'm amazed at the lengths that Audi has gone to in engineering this new layout. It must have cost a fortune. One thing is seemingly apparent; this new package appears to be designed from the outset to accomodate any one of the many transmission types that Audi offers including the S-Tronic dual clutch gearbox in combination with longitudinally engineered quattro.
This is a good thing as DSG is currently solely the preserve of Audi cars with transversly located engines and transmissions. So I anticipate that it ought not to be too long before we see S-tronic quattro A4's. Now that's quite a unique and compelling combination. Mmm... bolt that on to an uprated (circa 165 kW???) 2.0T engine and that's some package!
