New member and Need 997 Exhaust Info - 04-23-2008, 10:59 PM

Hi.

I'm a new member (first post - hello!) who is collecting info about after market exhausts for the 2007 997TT. I'm probably going to go with the AWE or Fabspeed exhaust. There is information about sound (not much in terms of good quality sound bytes though) and increases in HP and TQ (per manufacturer's dyno tests). I'm particularly interested in the other reasons, such as back pressure, heat, turbo lag reduction etc. This seems a topic done to death but except for manufacturer's web pages (and some good info from PCA) it's hard to find out about all the variables especially what you "give up" by changing the exhaust. From doing a lot of performance mods to my M3 it seems that once you change one part of the system, sooner or later, something else needs to be changed/adjusted to keep the balance. And when reflashing the ECU, surely these issues become more pronounced? I'd sure like to avoid the mod domino effect with this car.

Any info on exhaust, especially by those who have already changed theirs on a 997TT, would be great before I take the plunge!

Cheers,
K.

First of all, Hello. As for your quest, I am afraid I am not much help but there are sure to be some porsche nuts here that could help.

P.S. I edited your title a bit in an attempt to get you more responses.

You're right, modding your car can negatively effect other components. But if I were you I would also be interested in changing the exhaust system on my 997TT, what about Porsche's sport exhaust?? That would be a little safer route.

Either way quite a few guys are using AWE and Fabspeed exhaust as Rennteam and 6speedonline, so you better join on of those forums. 6speedonline has most mod freaks and they will probably be very helpful.

Welcome to the forum BTW

Thanks for the quick replies. I have checked out other forums but have received very few responses. Lots of opinions but few coupled with experience. This forum was very highly recommended to me so I'm glad to be a member and can hopefully contribute something as I get more experience/info.
Changing anything involves risk, for sure, but trying to estimate the trade off between risk (mechanical, reliability, and warranty) and the benefits is difficult to say the least. There are some who have made exhaust (and other) changes and report excellent results but are short on details. Of course, manufacturers and tuner shops say wonderful things (no disrespect intended). PCA techs (I would tend to put some weight on their comments) report positive results, such as increased mileage and educed back pressure which is supposedly related to increased turbo longevity. I'm not an engineer but it would be great to find some engineer forum members to add some info.

We still have a lot of snow here in Canada but hopefully the roads will be soon dry. I am waiting delivery of my 997TT, which is supposed to arrive before June, so I'm excited about this and planning what to invest in when it arrives - drawing from my M3 experience (but I've discovered no amount of M3 mods = a Porsche 911 in terms of the feel of the drive) and other info. I've got some track time for late summer and a week or two road trip in the works - Yahoo!

Anyway, I do appreciate the welcome. It says volumes about this Forum. I'll pass on whatever info I am able to collect.

I would maybe PM our member, drronh, he has a lot of high performance cars, including a 997 GT3 RS, so he might know something about it, or maybe even our member, donau, he does a lot of upgrades on his porsche, albeit it is an older one.

Re: New member and Need 997 Exhaust Info - decision made - 06-08-2008, 12:51 PM

I hope replying to myself isn't a sign of impending mental illness.

Anyway, thanks for the responses to my question. I wasn't satisfied with the audio clips available on the internet so I asked my tuner if he would call me when he had other turbos in the shop with different exhausts so I could listen to them. He obliged, and I was planning on having him order and install my exhaust anyway, so it turned out great. I listed to sport, stock, Milltek, and AWE. As soon as I heard the AWE I decided I didn't need to listen to anymore and ordered one for install when my TT arrives in the next week or two. He said none of his customers with new exhausts had any warranty issues with the Porsche dealer, so this was reassuring as well.
There you have it!
Thanks again.
