Yes, that new article took me surprise as I was anticipating the SL65 BS shoot-out first.
Anyhow, it is a great read and there's a lot of cool tech-talk in the write-up.

Some highlights:

Fixed rate springs being lighter than variable rate ones. Howcome?
[Just goes to show how much more I still have to learn. ]

Interesting that we now know for sure that the flat-six is bored out to its max at 102.7 mm. So, the 911's engine shan't get any bigger for the foreseeable future.

Pistons, while larger are lighter still

Steel bore liners a la 911 RSR racer are now used to re-inforce the cylinder walls.

Con-rods remain titanium (how cool is that)

Max rpm is 8500

No PDK option as this not only adds 30 kg of undesired weight but also detracts from the emotional appeal of the car. In other words: PDK is for the untalented.

New brakes are larger and run 30 percent cooler

Drag co-efficient is up from 0.30 cd to 0.32 but downforce is markedly better front and rear.

Xenons are now standard (I would bloody hope so)

We know about the dynamic engine mounts (PADM)

Steering feel and front end grip is improved

Steel synchromeshes for 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears

New LED rear light clusters are heavier than outgoing conventional ones - much to dismay of GT3's engineers

Porsche claim that the GT3 is faster 100 - 200 km/h than the 911 turbo

Oh, and DR give it 10/10!

That's all I can recall off the top of my head since reading the article this morning.

1395kg????

i seem to recall (from some reading) that the 997 gt3 and rs were slightly (ever so slightly) heavier than what the enthusiasts wanted. and i expected the generation two to be even heavier. then i looked at the weight expecting high 1400's. wow 1395 that's light!
this lightweight series really is and always was the favorite porsche.

Porsches getting beaten by japanese cars is nothing new, i still have somewhere at my parents' home some old magazine where a rotary-engined mazda rx7 buried a 964 on a french racetrack. the mazda is of course a fraction of the price of the porsche.

please, someone explain to me the obsession with the nissan gt-r? porsche don't need to make the gt3 any faster because it and all other 997's will sell like cookies anyway (unfortunately actually..). therefore all you get with a gt3 is a 911 fit for the track, made for the track with all the bits and pieces, but there still are other cars that are faster, so the f*ck what?

the nissan is so ugly and random looking that i've seen it in a dozen videos and right now i don't remember/couldn't describe how it looks, for god's sake. not that it needs to look good or anything but what is it about the gt-r, why not other cars? ok, blistering fast, and cheap, so the f*ck what.

Can we not turn this into another Nissan vs Porsche thread. If you must, just go to the Internal combustion section.
