Autocar's 997TT vs. Gallardo vs. BMW M6 vs.F430 group test

from m5board.com, no scans or accelerationnumbers presented. Just the conclusion.

This is what Steve Sutcliffe (known for favouring Porsche) said after testing the above three cars:

"A thought occurred as I climbed back into 'my' long term BMW M6 after two days spent driving the 911 Turbo and its rivals. It was this: why does the car world think 80 grand is too much for an M6 when these three cars cost over 100k each yet none of them are an faster in a straight line where it counts, or more civilised on a motorway, or anywhere near as well equipped, or as spacious, or as economical?

It's the difference, largely, in brand expectation. People are prepared to pay more for a Ferrari, Lamborghini or Porsche than they are for a BMW, and that's fair enough. A £15 Casio watch tells the time, as does a £15,000 Rolex Daytona etc...

But there comes a point when you think, hang on, who's right here? And the biggest surprise of all is that, all in all, I think I prefer the M6 to the 911 Turbo, money no object. In the real world it's just as fast (faster after a one-mile drag race, in fact, as we discovered on the runway at London City Airport recently) and for most of the time suits more of my needs, more of the time. In that light, 80 grand almost seems like a bargain. And £65k for an M5 becomes the sale of the century.
