This engine will be make the vehicle it is used in as fast as its 35i equivalent. No doubt. I wonder if it is as engaging? On the other hand, the typical use of this engine is in very mundane vehicles, this makes Merc's point very valid.

It will be highly engaging, just in a different way. A good friend of mine has a tuned 335d touring with 700 Nm and 330 hp, it's engaging alright.
But not as fun as the 335i imo!

Now with this new 306 hp diesel, BMW will surely come with a newtwin turbo I6 (around 350 hp??). The 306 hp 335i will very soon have Valvetronic and only one turbo....

I have driven the X6 xDrive35d and getting behind the wheel of the SUV I had no idea what was under the hood as I was too excited to ask questions and simply wanted to get down to business. After a 5 minute journey I popped the question and to my amazement I was told that the engine I was in control of was a diesel, at that moment I went "Huh??". A normal person can impossibally tell that the engine is a slow oil burner, it doesn't sound like one.

Character-wise, it's quite a lively engine and does respond with a considerably amount of thrust as cruising RPMs, and is thus perfect for a heavy car like the F01. But even in the more heavier X6, the engine was plenty of fun and packs the punch for sudden overtaking attempts on the motorway. The torque and power and more than ample for the F01 customer, unless they are of the type that seek the sort of engine that sings at higher RPMs. It's really an excellent engine.

So you liked driving the X6???? I personally have never done that yet, driving the X6, It's about time to do so I would say.
I did however had my first experiences with driving a mark II Targa 4S....Sick, sick, sick car I truly am getting in love with Porsche! Two weeks ago the Cayenne GTS, and now this monster. Porsche makes stunningly awesome cars.

I have no doubts that the engine will be very engaging, just read the reviews on the new 245ps masterpiece.

World debut: six-cylinder diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology in the BMW 740d.

The new diesel model in the BMW 7 Series is characterised by spontaneous and supreme traction and pulling power combined with outstanding efficiency. The BMW 740d features a newly developed six-cylinder power unit, an all-aluminium engine boasting BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and common-rail direct fuel injection with piezo-injectors operating at an injection pressure of up to 2,000 bar.

The charge system follows the Variable Twin Turbo principle and is made up of two turbochargers of various size perfectly matched to one another and therefore operating either individually or together as a team, depending on the driver’s power and performance requirements. High-pressure fuel injection ensures particularly precise dosage of fuel optimising both the car’s efficiency and the emissions coming from the engine.

The new power unit delivers maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp and peak torque of 600 Newton-metres/442 lb-ft maintained consistently between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. This gives the BMW 740d a level of performance so far only provided by far larger power units, now combined with the superior economy typical of a BMW straight-six diesel.

The BMW 740d accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds and is limited electronically in its top speed to 250 km/h or 155 mph.

Average fuel consumption of 6.9 litres/100 kilometres in the EU test cycle (equal to 40.9 mpg imp) and a CO2 emission rating of 181 grams per kilometre, finally, mark new records for efficiency in this performance class.

So, that would mean marketing names would have to be changed eg. every year or two - but BMW opted for a consistency & consolidation. TwinPower Turbo will be used in the future - for all the encanced turbo engine (eg. twinscroll, twin turbos etc) ... MultiTurbo Power label is considered to be used for all the future multi-tech turbo engines etc.

Mind that BMW always used "i" for all possible petrol engines, and "d" for all diesel engines. No matter what tech has been used behind.

TSI etc is typical VAG domain.
Be sure TwinPower label combined with simple "i" or "d" trademarks makes more sense to vast majority of customers than cryptic labels / trademarks like "TSI" , "TFSI", "CGI", "CDI", "TSDI" etc.
IMO, there isn't much advance in the development in terms of the actual turbo hardware, or the layout of the turbo system, so I don't really see the need to create all these marketing terms to accompany the launch of a new engine.

Probably not!! E92 facelift is coming in September (mabye on IAA) so production will be not before october/november! And the E92 330d just got the new 245hp engine of the E90 facelift! If I'm wrong, please someone correct me…so I don't thing that the 2010 335d will get the new 306 hp engine…but I could be wrong.
