The big deal it that you take your highly subjective opinion and shout it out all over the board. You might think it is fine, but many think not.

I agree in a sense. The S when bare bones looks kind of fat and blah in a way. Much sharper with the AMG pack. Then again, like I said, the W221 is hit and miss for me, I still sometimes admire the 220's pure clean design and execution when I see it next to a 221, although I do think it (220) was the weakest overall Sedan executed-design out of M-B's prior generation.

I've been seeing TONS of black W221's around where I live as Limo Service cars (with the white numbers pasted on the rear bumper), it's kind of F'ed up the cars imagery for me, as you see enough of those, the car falls into "Limo-Sedan" territory.

Haven't read through all the posts in this thread but I will say this; Firstly, being a BMW the new F01/2 shouldn't need a bunch of techno gizmos to handle like a proper big BMW sedan should. Right out of the box unmolested mechanicals should excel at doing the job of managing the ride/handling compromise. These electronic ride/handling suspension systems should only compliment an already superb setup. Not make the setup. Secondly, almost all the reviews I've read for the new 7 (haven't read through this one) complain about how much the 7 isn't an S-class. From what I recall the 7 was never suppose to be an S-class. It's the flagship BMW meant for those with a desire travel in first-class luxury looking for a serene driving experience as only a BMW can offer. It was never meant to be the best car in the world but the best BMW has to offer as a car company. If this car were all about ride comfort I'm almost certain it would be an S-class. Now that would work well wouldn't it?

It seems that products have to be less focused these days. Less special. Less unique. All have to be jacks-of-all-trades. Sharing platforms. They have to be loved by all... we all know how that tends to end.

You're right. What happens next is the cars lose their purpose and their brand identity, or what made them unique in past iterations in the first place. Here's something I read last night from Edmudns Insideline long term test summary on the W204 C-class..

Quote:
"Until you drive cross-country, you'll never understand just how good a Mercedes-Benz really is. It goes down the road with a purpose, but all the rough edges have been smoothed down from long experience with the whole vehicle engineering thing, so everything works with the sure, carefully damped action of the turn-signal stalk on a Mercedes S-Class sedan." This characteristic persona of the brand extends to all classes of Mercedes sedan, including our entry-level C300.
http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...hotopanel..2.*

In other words the C-class embodies what a Mercedes Benz was and should always be about: A superior driving experience with an emphasis on comfort. Not a car that's trying to be super sporty like a BMW 3er because that was the car that defined the segment the C competes in. Otherwise Merc would have a car that didn't really feel like a Merc and you'd hear journalists complain about how much the C feels like a car without purpose.

Exactly! And the same goes for the 3 series and C-class (and even Infiniti at times). It always goes down to...oh well it's not the 3 er. It is wrong to judges cars based on other models. I should about the actual car.
