Doesn't the W221 have the same starting system now? And you changed the gear with the small lever. But no one would ever say that the W221 is unecessarily complicated would they? I understand that the Idrive is not well liked by most people, but that's just how new cars are going to be designed from now on.
As for the 3er, it deactivates after a certain speed because why would you want it to still be on after you are done with parking? That's useful if you ask me.
I don't quite remember about if you can leave the automatic sensor on... it's been a while since I've been in an E90. You can do it with the lights so maybe you can do it with the rainsensors too.
