Because the competitors offer bigger cars as well in this segment.
Because executive class cars ( 5er) are getting bigger as well.
Because there is LWB 5er offered in Chinese market - so there also have to be significant size difference between 5er & 7er.
I guess people want larger & more spacious cars. Imagine eg. BMW not enlarging the 7er, and when new 5er comes the difference in size would be insignificant - and the rival carmakers eg. Audi coming with the eg. new generation A6 with almost same size as theoretically -not-enlarged F01 yet with a price of 5er.

Not a good scenario.
Btw, by bigger I mean longer & wider, yet not taller!

Exactly.
Shallow greenhouse, more coupeish roof, long & straight & powerful shoulder line, bigger wheels, improved proportions (eg. nose not looking as weak anymore in comparison to the rest of the car).
If every part is enlarged then the major dimensions (LxWxH) are well hidden. MB have done that with C-class, and doing it again with E-class - the designs are so balanced in proportions & so beefy the whole car looks visually smaller than it really is.

they could have done much much more in my opinion just look at the step the last 7 or s or even lexus took bmw seems really scared or worried to take bold steps with the 7 both inside and outside to be honest i find the outside boring...
what happen to the guys who designed the awesome cs concept .....bmw could have done much much more from what i am seeing from spypics and pics on the thread its not a big step as i expected i really thaught the new 7 will blow the s away in terms off looks or design and interior but i think its safe to say they wont blow the s class away remeber the s class is already 3 years old although it seems still very fresh and new |
A said so many times: in design terms F01 isn't revolutionary in regard to current BMW model line as it was E65 to the BMW model line at that time. This time the transition is very smooth & evolutionary. But still - when comparing E65 to F01 the differences are very visible. So, beside new details (eg. larger grille, new LED rear light design, Hofmeister kink echo etc) F01 isn't bringing any revolutionary design solutions inside & outside. It's just a little step further from the last launched new BMW model - the X6. Very continuous process this time ... no big steps.
Also: it was said by BMW designers their marketing researchers detected "reduced zen-like design" is currently a trend in luxury segment. Simple, clean yet powerful lines. So BMW designers addressed that, and brought back some E38 elements E65 missed (eg. shark-like nose, driver oriented dash, sleek visual appearence).
I find it very interesting in this respect: MB is going more expressive with their future designs, applying numerous busy lines & curve. Audi is also bolder in their designs with every new car they introduce. I guess Lexus will also be more radical. So will eg. new Jaguar XJ.
Now imagine calm & clean design of F01 7er ... Completely standing out from the crowd - again!
Regarding to the buzz E65 created in 2001 the F01 will be much more "boring" in this respect. Also the design won't be as controversial & as in-your-face. But it is still very modern, trendy & futuristic / avant-garde. Yet calm & clean. Definitely not boring.
But it definitely fits much better in BMW model line than E65 in 2001 --- F01 won't stand out from BMW model line as much.
Regarding BMW styling: "Bangle-design" with flame surfacing refinement & evolution. With some heavily stylized "retro" elements eg. shark-like nose, driver-oriented dash etc)
Also have in mind: designers are limited with marketing & engineering expectation. They get the frame (all the dimensions), and they just have to style the "skin".
... F01 ...
People who love current BMW model line - especially the latest models introduced - will love it.
People who hate "Bangelized" BMWs will hate it - just like they hate all the current BMWs.
People who expect F01 to be as special & revolutionary as E65 was in 2001 will be disappointed, and will find "F01 "boring & unexcited".
People who expect F01 to be ugly duckling again will be pleasantly surprised since the car is a looker.
