The strip is interrupted to give a space for eg. Active Criuse Control radar, or NightVision camera. Cars without these options will have a continuous strip.

Oh ok... well that's a relief, otherwise it would seem a little odd just putting a break in the chrome strip like they've done in that picture.

Why chrome? Because people want it. Most of the customers (espacially in USA) still believe chrome represent luxury & prestige. BMW was forced to bring some chrome back.

Damn... so are you hinting that BMW got it a bit wrong? .. Seems like BMW's been quietly back-tracking a little. The 7er, the Z4 and now the 5er have had their aggressively shaped bumpers turned upside-down to create a smiley look. The 7er and 5er have also been giving simple chrome strips (ala A6).
I'm beginning to think that BMW's strategy is to initially designs vehicles which look rather aggressive and mean to appeal to the true BMW fans. Then once it comes time for the facelift each model is given a toning-down to a more widely acceptable design so as to try and keep sales flowing. And coz of the toning-down, the replacement model will look more dynamic.
I dunno... maybe I'm a bit paranoid, but seems like BMW is 'coming back to the pack' in terms of their designs.
I really wished BMW would have also changed the rear bumper a bit more. Re-placed those red reflectors to give off a cleaner rear-end look.
Hate to say it now.. but in my eyes the facelifted E-class looks just that bit more appealing than this facelifted 5er simply because the E is beginning to look more sporty while the 5er is trying to look more luxurious.
As for the 'shiny is expensive'.... well you can't really blame BMW for doing what they did, the US market is full of pretty stupid, naive, and image concious people. They need big pick-ups to make themselves feel big n tough... you got 50 year old mothers and fathers trying to recapture their youths by driving cheap sportcars... and ofcourse 70 years old who look at nothing but the badge on the front of the car. But hey.. i guess with such a blind market if you give them what they want.. they'll buy your product.
