I'm over the auto show season now so I'll probably go looking at some cars just to be looking so I'll add the 08' 5-Series to the list. I want to see it up close now.

Yep, yeah it does stand out with the aluminum trim, moreso than with the wood IMO.

I think it is because the piece of wood in that area is exactly the same shape in every 5er, regardless of transmission and before and after the facelift. Because SMG and Steptronic transmissions have a different shape than the manual, they put the piece of plastic there to fill up the holes.
