What i am dissapointed about the engineering. It's suppose to be BMW's most thoroughly engineered car, but some details contradict this:

-4 star safety rating: c'mon, this car is suppose to have a 5 star safety rating considering it's bodyshell is one of the stiffest in class. Even a Fiat has a 5 star rating:

-Interior design and quality: i'm so sick and tired of reading reviews where the interior plastics of a 5 are compared to that of a Daewoo. It's so dissapointing when accountants overrule the engineers in the interior dept.

-No LED tailights: again, another shot of cost-cutting. Its a worrying trend for BMW, a model would have LEDs where the next generatio doesn't. Witness the E39 to E60, and the 3 Coupe/Convertible (full LEDs) where the new models only have Celis-LEDs for night-light.

Anyway i hope these issues are addressed with the FL 5er.

Something interesting, Dr Walter Wohnig, the development chief for E60, was demoted to head of body purchasing.

Yes that safty rating is yet another big issue that should have been addressed in the design room. The 5er (driver) was noted for having head and knee injouries.. This company has a big reputation to look after for safty to be a second-hand issue.

in sweden there was recently a saftey survey and both bmw and Mb came on the "bad" list. Apparently bmw and mb dont offer chairs for Whiplash accidents, you have to pay extra for it. On swedish cars thats standard so they came on the "good" list. Shame on bmw and mb.

Thats interesting,, if I can recall the new 5er also didn`t do well in the side impact either which is another -. The E39 5er (noted IFHS) "was the best car ever tested by us."

the 5er was two points away from getting 5 stars in eurocap, thats not much. 5er is not a more dangerous car than others, there been some serious accidents with the M5 and people has survived. This 4 star thing is excessively. Like I said before, this 4 stars only hurts in markeeting purpose. 5er is not a dangeorus car, in fact its more safer than smaller cars with 5 stars rating from eurocap.

Audi Q7 also got 4 stars in eurocap at first but Q7 is still a very safe car.

funny thing with eurocap is if a car gets 4 stars then they can do some minor changes on the car to get 5 stars. For instance, MB added a safety belt warning light in the instrument panel in the current C-Class and got 2 extra points for that. These 2 points raise it from 4 stars to 5 stars.

This is something I don`t like about euro testers.. thay usually get too opinionated without the true-numbers to back their statements.

When we Americans test something the numbers really add up. I like IFHS,.. thay give a car that has not successfully passed the test to the fullest degree but did well, 4-stars. A car that has successfully passed the test, with flying results gets the true 5-stars rating. That 5-star rating
test includes side impacts as well. I believe IFHS just added rear inpacks not too long ago. A car tested by them has to pass all these tests to get the true 5-star rating.

My point here is the numbers should really add up to the true scientific test results. These numbers shouldn`t be played with because your life is at stake here.

Saw a gazillion E60's this morning, and I must say, I love the design.

.......

Watch yourselves!!! You're talking about MY car here...

And now after reading some opinions about MY car here, i suggest to some of you to always sleep with one eye open and always look over your shoulder when you walk... You'll never feel safe again... You're messing with Munich Magic here and that can lead you only in this:

j/k of course...

In any case, i strongly disagree with Michael on every single point. What else would you expect, right?

Re: 5er issues - 12-18-2006, 09:24 AM

It's almost 4 years when 5er was introduced and since that time, every single member from this board had an opportunity to "check" the car and see if he likes it or not. IMHO, to say something like this after 4 years, like Michael did, sounds a little bit weird. Regardless, it's his personal opinion with which i don't have to agree, but i disagree... A LOT! Not because i own the car... Even if it had Hyundai badge, i'd still say that the car looks fabulous.

Yeah, Michael or any other person on this board can jump in now and say: Ok, Tyc, but please tell us, why you disagree with Michael so much? Why do you like the 5er so much?

I don't need to explain that and honestly i'm not willing! I've paid more than 90k for my car, because i like the front, rear, side profile, interior, engine, safety (yeah, don't b***h about it like it got only 1 star by NCAP), quality, handling, suspension, warranty, dealer service, good leasing conditions, etc...

Plus, there's no car in this segment with everything that my car has that can compete! A6 3.0TDI? You wish! It's a great car, but no match in handling, brakes, engine, suspension, etc... You're gonna buy it just because it hase better quality interior? Go for it. E320 CDI? Lol, when the new one arrives, we can talk, untill then - has no chance! Some may like it's design and comfort better and i respect that, but those are the only fields where E320 or A6 3.0TDI can win over my 535d... Of course, in someone else's opinion...

Don't get me wrong, people, you know that i have a lot of respect for all big boys from Germany and i'll never say that any of them is c**p or so, but this is my personal choice and opinion... Just like Michael's pick on 5er's design...

Peace!
