probably same reason why some people want a 500hp SUV or a 500hp sportcar.
If you ask me, a 500hp car is too much for the streets but still we love to own one. I know I dont say no to a 300, 400 or 500 hp car if someone give me one.

you can be as pointless as you want to be. Thats the beauty of it. Why buy a cheaper pair of Levi jeans that cost $21 when you can own a pair of Polo jeans for $65.

well tourings might look like just having the the boot raised and the screen moved backwards but that entails a lot of difference in handling, suspension geomtery, center of gravity etc...
so all in all suc a car must be done according to BMW ///M philosphy, and as such it cannot be "just" a 5er wagon with the V10 an SMG, it has to fully comply with the strict internal regulations of ///M
as such a coplete rehaul of the rear structuring and geometry has been needed to provide a similar experience to the standard M5, itself already being much different from the standard 5
so the ///M5 touring is 3 levels evolution wise above a standard 5 and 2 above a standard touring

Good points but there are also many of SUV to suit everyones` needs as well large or small even in the performance bracket (la-la BMW X5) that also do the same job as your wagons. Thing is we American believe SUVs` are more hip (simply look better doing the job than wagons. (Wagons sort of give a soccer mom image. How many single dudes or chics do you see driving a wagon)

But again my point wasn`t about wagons in general but a 500hp one, it`s extremely pointless but if your in the market you can be as pointless as you want to be.
I was thinking about this the other day and I have to say, if I had a choice between one of the E63, I think I'd take the station wagon, just because I think it's actually really hip. It's even better if it is the only car you have.
