The mood has completely changed and cars sales might not reached the peak of 2007 figures in 5-10 years because of stricter market regulation. BMW's new GT is more in touch with reality although it has one or two questions marks as far as usability goes. But overall it does present a new way of developing an MPV as the majority we've seen during the recent 10-20 years have been rather embarrassing from an image point of view. The GST Vision concept was a breath a fresh air but the production car was quite distant from the thrilling dream people want to believe in. Somehow I see the 5-series GT as the real GST as it does appear as a car one can park amongst top bimmers and without wanting to hide ones face in the glove compartment. | |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Without Hijacking this thread and just for two secons off-topic - yes!!! ![]() ![]() Okay, back to topic!! Quite like this new GT and looks much more appealing then the R-Class! The BMW definitely combines the sporty and elegant with a lot of comfort. Can't wait to sit in one! Does this car have electric rear seats!?! Could be a reason for the different "fitting" of persons in the rear! ![]() edit: Just found the answer right here in this thread!! ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I've never seen this GT (a pity they are whoring such a glorious name for a whale), but find the idea quite pointless (unlike the X6 which makes perfect sense as a kinda SUV-Coupe). However, I assume the developping costs were minimal as it surely rides on the F10 platform. So in the end, return for investment shouldn't be too bad if the marketing dep did its job. That said, marketing people are often completely off the market like proved many times with totally unsuccessful/mismarketed products, so... Time will tell. This is not such a risky move, as the car isn't a brand new one but basically a rebodied F10 (isn't it?). However, it won't make BMW's image any good, as it surely will appeal to older people and is far from sporty. Even if the core products remain sporty, a carmaker's image is influenced by all the products it makes, and if the unsporty looking products become the mainstream BMWs, then the sporty image will fade big time. This doesn't appear to be completely unwelcomed by BMW, as we saw with the new Z4 which could very well bear the three-pointed star according to the reviews. I think BMW realized the rich population gets older and wants a share of MB's cake, even if the holy sporty spirit in suffering a bit in the process...

![]() | Well let's see...I want to stay 'forever young' though the reality is I am getting older, so are we all. I am very far from old though... My point is apart from the family man, Hotels and execs, the 5er GT has a role to fulfill. I for one are a SAV man, more SAV Coupe in the form of the X6 that is. There are people out there who HATES SUV/SAV's and BMW listened to them, their customer's needs. These certain customers may be older people who prefer the 'feel' of a high driving position and enjoy the space of a BMW 7er, they do not want a BMW 7er becuase 'he/she' drove them as execs back in their day, he/she hates SAV's. Their niche is fulfilled with the 5er GT. That is one scenario and way of thinking, call it an opninion if you like. Fact is that this new product - as the X6 will sell and make the choice of driving a BMW so much easier. Investing in a car these days is like buying a watch or sunglasses....The more choice...... I have but 9 watches an 6 pairs of sunglasses.... And one day when I am retired I may feel the need to transport my buddy's in comfort to the golf coarse in a 5er GT. I see the whole purpose of the GT. |
