An increase of 5.5liters, Direct Injection technology, + Twin-Turbos..
with only a 50hp increase?

It should be nothing under 80hp with those advancements.

I just think it is far to early to speculate on hp for the next M5. Right now though 550hp does sound a little tame, but I don't expect the next E63 to have more than 550hp either. Then again who knows.

Yep I agree, one thing that concerns me is the weight factor of the next M5
with these improvements. More than likely the car will be heavier.

Than again it`s way too earily for predictions like you say..

And now we are talking about fuel economy in one of these exotic sports cars..
but yea, if the weight goes down, even the current spec of the V10 will do the job, but if the weight goes down, i would guess they probably need to reduce the weight of the V10 as well, i doubt the engine can be pushed back any further to achieve their 50:50 distribution. And to get 550horses, they dont' even need a 5L engine to do it with turbos and other new techs right?
Wonder if there will ever be diesel M models, REAL efficient dynamics... let's do 8L/100km fuel consumption with 500hp and 800Nm!

But it is too early, it won't hit showrooms until sth like early 2012.

These predictions can be made now, it's not too early for that. F10 will focus much more on weightsaving techniques than they did when developing E60. The new M5 will: 1) be lighter than current model 2) be more efficient/fuel saving 3) have more hp than the current one

BMW Efficient Dynamics 101
Scott said in another thread that the next version of the V10 will have 625 hp.....but we don't know for what car that will be of course (or if it's true)

strange is'nt it?? about a decade ago if someone were to mention ///M and turbo charging in the same sentence it would be considered a taboo yet here we are speculating the next generation M5's aspiration. From the current success of the N54 and future potential of the N64, I have braced myself for TT offering from ///M. Looking forward to it.

Oh yeah, one of the biggest complaints with the current gen M5 has been fuel tank capacity. Most owners have complained about refuelling after very short intervals. Hopefully the next gen will be more economical and sport a bigger fuel tank.

Not that strange if you look at what rock age technology was used in turbo configurations 10-15 years ago... had there been todays and maybe tomorrows know-how back then M GmbH would have gone that way from the start...

lOl, thanks for the responce klier

You believe that man.. I mean come on. BMW has never been that power hungry in the past. 600 plus hp is pretty extreme when thay just broke the 500 mark with the current model.

On top of that with the addition of a bigger displacement, turbo chargers and other toys the car should be a bit heavier. If it`s going to be lighter the M boys have some work to do.

There was an 100+ Hp jump from the previous M5 to the present one, so I won't be surprised if the next one makes 600+ HP. But in the end it will be competition that will determine how much the next M5 makes. RS6 already makes 580 HP (more out of necessity I believe) but if the next AMG E responds with 600HP, I doubt BMW will hesitate in putting it's 600 HP foot forward. All pretty silly though imo. For the first time, I am actually turned off by these HP numbers.

M GmbH outlined weight reduction as their priority with the upcoming models. So I'd expect the M5 to be more focused on low weight rather than insane power output.
