Humans are extremely curious by nature and when given the chance to exceed the speed limit, studies show that they will. More then half of the MVA I deal with at work are due to speeding. If cars in Australia were limited to 120km/h, drivers would not have the option to speed. It shouldn't even be a option because it is illegal!

In terms of the smart GPS system, I don't mean for th car to control the speed but to control the speed limit of the car. On a 60km/h road, the GPS would register that is the speed of the road and subsequently delimit the car to only 70km/h. This would allow people to still exceed the limit slightly in an emergency but not ofer the ability to go say 100+km/h on a 60km/h road.

I know this would not have helped the five men killed in this dreadful accident but something must be done to stop fatalities related to speeding on the road. If we take away the option of speeding then hopefully we will see a major reduction!!!
I understand but like I said, I would not be happy if my cars defines my max speed instead of me. Who is the driver, who has the word? My car or me?

And what if you want to overtake a slow truck, if you only have 10km/h more you'll need ages to overtake and it will be extremely dangerous.

Furthermore, even if the speed is limited, the cars would be powerful, because nobody wants an expzensive car that needs ages to go to 100km/h and makes a lot of noise. So it would be like mopeds, people who want to speed would find ways to turn the limiter off, and it is only honest people that would suffer from these limitations. Like it is for current AMG or M.

It would kill the passion, too, no more Ferrari or Porsche in a world where a Lada is just as fast as a Lambo...

That said, I agree that cars could be limited to, say 160km/h, but not directly GPS-regulated. Some cars allow you to set a max speed, like Mercedes. Could became standard.

And again, there is not a bigger death rate in free Autobahns. The problem is not really the speed, but more the stupid driving. Some people are even dangerous at 50km/h.

I think a much more complete driver test is a better solution; where you experience the spinning of a car, the aquaplanning, the braking in a curve, under/oversteering etc.

That sure is an interesting discussion,a lot could be done for more safety on the road. I just wish our freedom will not suffer from that. I don't want my car to spy and control me.

No need to ban high-performance cars or limit every car according to the speed-limit of your country.
