Not everyone can afford a 535d so a 520d is cheaper option fro them.

Yup, and even if one can afford the 535d one might just go for the 520d for the amazing fuel consumption. The 520d consumes significantly less fuel than the 525d 530d an 535d. It's either go all the way for the 535d or go small with the 520d. In between doesn't really make sense IMO.
