The front end is kinda long, looks like they're going for a front-mid engine placement even moreso than normal.

Actually, compare it to the CLS rear-door, it's nearly identical.
Good thing is, BMW won't call the 5er a coupe. If you want to see the gradual coupe-like transformation of the 5er, just compare the Hoffmeister kink on the E39 5er that klier posted with that of the F10 test-car! A totally wicked change from restrained elegance to all-out sporting charisma! |
Here are some of my posts / claims from Summer 2006 & 2007, posted mostly in the earlier posts of this thread: Quote: |

Board decided BMW will not go with a 4-door coupe ala CLS, A7, Panamera etc, but will make core models - 5er & SWB 7er - more sportier, with dynamic styling, and coupeish look. Additional sedanish 4dr coupe would be totally redundant. | Quote: |
Originally Posted by EnI But do not think next 5er will look exactly so coupeish as CLS. It won't be a coupe. It will be classic sedan with extreme sporty appearance - imagine E-class & CLS all-in-one-car.
There will be still much headroom in the backseats. But since the car will be a bit longer, wider, a bit lower & much longer wheelbase, the roof will be more sloping & greenhouse a bit narrower - contributing to more coupeish & sportier look - but not so extreme as CLS.
This general guide by marketing people have been already confirmed by Board, development engineers are already working on solutions, designers will get the precise technical directions soon.
As said before: BMW won't make 4-door sedanish-coupe ala CLS, but will make next 5er & SWB 7er sedans more sportier and a bit more coupeish, so the CLS-like vehicle would be redundant. Instead BMW will offer 5-door X6 sport activity coupe. | Quote: |

Very sharp ... Very aggressive ... Classy presence ...
Great design, great tech, superb quality (fit & finish). Be afraid, Jaguar XF!
I was also told the new BMW design makes the cars VERY sleek, long, straight ... Very sporty elegant. Think of E24 or E38 sporty elegance. With a significant touch of modernism. Guys who have seen CS Concept IRL will know what I'm talking about.
The "bloaty" times are over ... "Sleeky" times are coming ... F01 will be the first step ...
So ... long, sleek, and sharp shapes are coming back. Many long & sharp straight lines. And ... of course ... the huge kidney grille ... | Quote: |
Originally Posted by EnI Regarding coupeish shape ... As I said earlier: do not expect CLS or XF shape. That's too much coupeish. But expect more coupes form in comparison to current 5er, and the direct rivals (new E-class & A6).
5er is staying a true executive sedan - and it can't afford to be too coupeish: since the LWB Chinese version. Mind that in China 5er (LWB) is (as well as a6 LWB) is a popular choice - so it has to have enough (head)room in the backseats. | Quote: |

E-class & A6 are definitely the most serious 5er rivals - regarding the sales, image, price, etc. And BMW definitely pay a lot of attention what the competition is doing. Eg. E-class can be a benchmark for comfort, A6 Quattro for traction & fit+finish. But regarding the driving dynamics & generally sporty appearance the XF is currently the benchmark in executive sedan segment. And BMW are determined to dethrone XF , and make 5er again the king of sportiness in this segment. | Quote: |

Like I said before: 5er going more coupe way, while E-class & A6 are not: due not to overlap with CLS & upcoming A7. 5er has no such issue, since there's no 4dr coupe based on 5er platform. 8er will be much bigger & more expensive: positioned above 7er.
Therefore 5er is moving away from E-class & A6, coming closer to Jaguar XF (and according to rumors new Infiniti M & Lexus GS are going the same way as well). |
