To replace the N62B48 engine in the 550i. No doubt the N64B44O1 engine will eventually make it to the 5 series, so it makes sense to test it in the 5 series at this stage.
Lets not forget that the supercharged version of the N62B44 from Alpina puts out numbers close to S85 in terms of HP, and torque that exceeds the S85 engine. So I can see why it is tested in the M5.
I still at this stage have doubts with regards to a bi-turbo S85 engine, I see increasing displacement by 10% as an easier route to maintain the same high revving philosophy. Turbo-charging the engine will have negative impact on the rev limit unless it is kept to extremely low pressure, at such pressure might as well increase the displacement by 10%.
We might see a 5.5 litre V10 under the bonnet of the M5.
