To replace the N62B48 engine in the 550i. No doubt the N64B44O1 engine will eventually make it to the 5 series, so it makes sense to test it in the 5 series at this stage.
Lets not forget that the supercharged version of the N62B44 from Alpina puts out numbers close to S85 in terms of HP, and torque that exceeds the S85 engine. So I can see why it is tested in the M5.

I still at this stage have doubts with regards to a bi-turbo S85 engine, I see increasing displacement by 10% as an easier route to maintain the same high revving philosophy. Turbo-charging the engine will have negative impact on the rev limit unless it is kept to extremely low pressure, at such pressure might as well increase the displacement by 10%.
We might see a 5.5 litre V10 under the bonnet of the M5.

Guys, such decisions are made at the beginning of the development program - so many years ago!
Of course,i was joking but seriously after seeing the RS6 having that much power M and AMG has nothing but to up thier game!

Yeah. Back in 05/06 bimmer fans bashed Benzes and Audis for using forced induction like super and turbo chargers. Further more they mocked MB for not being as "serious" about sport since they offer AMG versions of all there cars.

Now in 07, there is the turbo charged 335i, Big heavy SUV aka X6 coming up with M badges all over it and now there seem to be a turbo charged M car in the line up. I guess BMW are whoring themselves now.

The M5 seen here is a development and mechanical mule.
You ask why there has been no sightings of a M6 CSL? Which will make an appearance as a Concept first.

For the CSL the V10 will get a power increase and this will acquire more cooling ducts larger than the current car to incorporate BMW's upcoming CBS technology - Ceramic Braking System . and the upgraded BMW V10. There will not be a M7 because what is the point of the M5 which has always been the top performance sedan? To do so you Piss on your history and tradition at the sake of playing with and trying to outdo others.

The production model of the CS will fill in for the M7 but BMW have not even committed an M project for this car. Many wish it be the stand alone BMW that sits as the flagship of the BMW brand forming the bridge to Rolls-Royce.

M-cars getting forced induction must be the ultimate wet dream for anyone wanting to bash BMW and their fans - all forgetting why turbo was never an option for BMW M before.

Yes, i admit, i was also one of those saying that with turbos that wouldn't be the M philosophy i know for, but something totally different. And still i don't get that sudden change of something that lasted few decades...

Anyways, i guess they wanted to show others they know other things too and not only NA stuff...

The same can be said for MB i think, they didn't get that many praises for their cars and handling (in AMG form) till they turned to NA variant...

It's all good and what matters is that we potential customers are satisfied...
