Good point! Hence the need for M6 CSL.

Healthy upgrade and should make the M5 blistering fast. but the upgrade in needed since a new M5 won't be here until 4-5 years while the RS6 has just been introduced and a new E-class AMG is coming in 18-24 months.

How are then gonna pull that off? 570hp from a already pushed 5.0, are they gonna increase displacement? or throw the revs to 8500/8750?

567 hp....wow.....Audi needs 5.2 liter and two turbos for this kind of power.

Oh come on Klier, you know that's drivel. Audi is perfectly capable of making an engine with such power without the use of forced induction.

That is a very specific figure...

Uhhh, come again? Have you ever seen an NA Audi engine with more than 100 hp per liter? I don't think I have. The engine in the R8 is the closest thing they have. Maybe they can make one, I don't know. But I sure haven't seen it yet. Saying that Audi can do that is like saying Daihatsu can do it to.

Re: BMW to boost M5 - power upgrade - 10-29-2007, 03:34 PM

the key word my dear klier and bruce is not in achieveing such a figure or not
there are 2 main considerations when building such an engine (this high a specific output from NA)
one is resources, since given enough money, even if you know nothing of your project you can spend enough to compile the needed research
and two is the engineering procedure itself, even if you spend enough money, without experience and history in the subject you cannot get a good engine with any specific requirement with excellent figures in the remaining characteristics
let me illustrate this
caparo has built an engine with very high specific output with very little funding, but most of their engineers already have a lot of experience in the subject, but due to the lack of funding mainly, the engine is a disaster reliability wise, so they did build an engine with very high specific output, but it is not a good engine per se
in the case of audi, they theoretically can have both funding and experience, whereas they can easily "buy" engineers from other companies that can help them build such an engine
but is it what they need?
audi's image has never that of high strung high rev high specific output low capacity engines, and their effort in the 420hp 4.2 V8 is very commendable, but do they need to spend so much resources to venture into an area that will not bring them the needed profit?
high strung, high rev, high specific output low capacity engines are a staple of BMW with expertise going back 40 years, and with a specified budget allocated to teh M division, which is an essential part of the BMW image

i will repeat again the modern engineering mantra, give me enough money and i will build anything
the key word is am i willing to spend that much money for anything?
