Wishful speculation if you will. I.E. Mercedes won't take Audi and BMW outpowering the E63 for long.

and this is not very healthy in the car industry
cuase if there is one thing we ALL can agree on.. its the fact that all brands are into making money..
and in one way BMW does not chose what they want to make.. the ppl chose..
and thats why if i was a BMW fan.. i would not diss the concept of the R class
i would not diss the concept of the smart..
things like that will most likely come back and bite you in the ass like this turbo thing just now did..

AMG fans.. or RS.. they have never dissed NA,Turbo or kompressor..
wich leaves them with a possibility to praise their brand in whatever direction they go..
and i know you would love that possibility..

PS
So bottom line.. one should not diss a concept.. of engines, cars whatever
if you cant see your own fav brand doing that.. and you hating it..

Artist, you are correct here and so is Pagani!
This is called Market-Strategy and market strategy has never been more active and extremely compeditive than in the 21st centery. In order to play you must stay ahead of the competition and this requires constant change as the consumer demands it.

The thing with BMW fans is that thay get a blind-fascination of the BMW M engine design philosphy and thay call that a traditional formula that BMW should stick with and nothing else.

Thats not going to hold in the world market because the market constantly changes. (take a look at the new M3. BMW M saw fit to give it a V8 instead of a 6-cylinder engine, did BMW break tradition here? the M3 was using in-lines 6es for more than 20 years. Today the market appeal for V8s is very high now so the new M3 has met the demand.) We all have to admit that BMW has mastered the Hi-Rev concept very well with the S851350 V10 engine and this is well known and I believe BMW should stick with this concept if the engine does get Bi-Turbo charged.

My main concern with hi-powered F/I engines is the engines flexibility
across the revs. This was a problem with F/I engines but the Germans are teaching these engines how to flex ultimate power across the entire rpm-bands with even higher revs. I`m more than sure we will see this with the supposed Bi-Turbo M5.

Turbos wouldn`t change the M tradtion. Thay would enhance it.
Engineering concepts should never be called traditions in the first place.

575hp is a huge jump from 507hp for the M5, I agree with Merc1 but 650 would be too much for the supposed E63 and would kill the current S65s 612hp mark. It should be more like 602hp but even that would step on the current S63 and coming SL63 525hp. Whatever the case if AMG uses the N/A M156 in the next generation AMG E the competition will kill it.

Unlike the M5 and RS6 the E63 has a lot of heads to bump before it can jump into the 600hp mark.

Re: BMW M5 twin-turbos? - 09-20-2007, 01:25 PM

So then if it's big a jump from a 5.0 ltr. V10 from 507 (PR/marketing rating) to 575, how did Caparo managed to squeeze 575 hp from a 3.5 ltr. NA V8 ?!

A V8 should be able to rev till 16000 rpms without problems, a V10 as long as it doesn't stay in the 12000-14000 rpms area, it can go even beyond 20000 rpms.

Why can't the likes of BMW use pneumatic valve gear systems, exotic materials and Co., 10000+ rpms for production cars ?!

The Caparo engine revs to 10000+ rpm and needs to be rebuild every 6500 miles. While that might be okay for what is for all practical purposes a track car, it definitely is not for a main stream street car.

Good point Sunny. I was about to say the same but I didn`t get around to it.
10000 RPM is extreme stress. We woun`t be seeing street cars with that sort of output.

Post BMW to boost M5 - power upgrade - 10-02-2007, 11:57 AM

As these exclusive spy shots seem to prove, BMW is apparently very scared about the competition to their current M5 coming from Audi's all-new RS6 which was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Closer examination of the photos reveals additional mesh-covered air-intakes in the front bumper to satisfy the upgraded V10-engine under the bonnet.
Rumours suggest it is going to be pushed to no less than 425kW to match that of the RS6.
The current M5 delivers 373kW of power.
The photographer who delivered the spy-shots reports about a much more aggressive and somewhat lower sound and is sure to have heard the car was equipped with the new DSG transmission rather than the SMG used for M5s so far.
The upgrade M5 will probably be launched at next year's Geneva Motor Show.

can't say I'm not a bit dissapointed with this news. I was always proud of the M5 having the same poweroutput during it's lifetime in stead of joining the crazy powerbattle done during the lifecycle of AMG or RS vehicles.

Bah. The M5 has enough power as it is, no need for a power upgrade.
