disatisfied M5 owner...

Derek FSU on why he dumped his brand new E60 M5...

Quote:
Yep, that's me. Having been on the M5 waiting list for two years, months before I bought the E, I couldn't pass up on the car.

It is truly an amazing car in the areas in which it is built to compete. I DOMINATED every porsche in the solo run group this weekend minus 1. Not only did I eat them alive in the straights, but I caught them in the curves. That is truly unheard of for a 4,100lb family car. It is no different or less amazing than our E besting Cobras and ZO6's on the dragstrip. I took an instructor for the ride on the last day who raved about the new Maserati sedan UNTIL our ride was completed. His quote was, "that car is amazing out there. It kills the Maserati."

I think the M5 is a 12.6 car in the quarter mile with proper driving, something I have not accomplished yet. I also think it's probably the most versatile car I've ever driven. Carry your clients or family around town and to meetings, run a sub 13 second quarter mile, and run with and pass sportscars all day long on the track.

Soooo, why am I selling it. One word- Noble. I don't need a versatile car that can run on the track because I have a Noble that will destroy the M5 and nearly any other street legal car in the world. IMO, the E is more comfortable and more luxurious. And most importantly, my wife likes the E because it is "smoother" to drive.

With all that love for the M5, let me clarify it's most serious shortfalling in my opinion- no low end torque. You can have a ball in the E from 0-45 and never brake the speed limit. In the M5, you need some great curves or you have to wind out 2nd gear. Make the E handle like the M or give the M some low end testocerone plus a nip & tuck here and there, and you've got the perfect car. But watch out for the Noble!
Funny enough, I can totally understand where he's coming from, the M5 was designed as a road going F1 car w/ four doors, while the E55 is clear in it's intent and purpose in being a four door sedan w/ comrfort and ameneties, and a hardcore engine w/ a stupid amount of torque that you can use EVERYDAY. As where in an M5 you can only use 8,000 revolutions on a track, however often you track? Both are great cars, but fulfill two very different rolls, and after some thinking, I'd rather have an E55 than an M5...anyday.... because I do burnouts on a daily basis AND the E is tons sexy and has a real emotional appeal about it. Will be interesting to see how the E63 stacks up...

Re: disatisfied M5 owner...

Well, I wouldn't necessarily label him as a "disatisfied owner". I think he just didn't find the need for it - having a noble for track purposes and the merc for daily driving. The way I see it, the M5 is for owners who want one car that can do it all. A person who can afford to buy multiple cars for various purposes wouldn't find the need for an 'all-in-one' car.

I hear you, I said disatisfied simply because he obviously had some real issues w/ the car to sell it in such a short period of time! Some lucky individual will snatch it up though

Re: disatisfied M5 owner...

I have talked to Derek by PM.
He liked the car very much and would keep it if he didnt had the Noble. He has driven the M5 around a track and was very impressed by the M5 but the M5 miss the low torque that the E55 offer. He thought the M5 would do well at 402 meters but it was not as he expected so he is selling the M5. He is keeping his E55 and Noble. so it was not like he was disatisfied cause it was a bad car, the car didnt just satisfied his needs.

BTW we also have a member that was deciding between CLS55 but he didnt like the car as much as the M5.

CLS55 IMHO is a very very sexy car. both interior and out. Plenty of torque across the range and always seem like it has plenty of power. The auto transmission left me wanting more. The backseat will push any adult into the roof with any bump in the road. But still, it's a sexy car with awsome engine. The CLS is faster off the line too because it has more torque in the lower RPM's ( I know about LC but have not experienced it. In my test drives, the CLS feels faster off the line.)

However, they both drive very very different. M5 revs and handles more like a sports car then the CLS. the M5's SMG is simply awsome compare to the CLS. Both can be very comfortable cruiser in the right settings.

I drove them almost back to back. ( drove the CLS friday night and drove the M5 Saturday morning. ) For me, the personality of the M5 is more suited to my driving. The CLS just always feel BIG and heavy and the M5 seems to get smaller as you drive it more. The handling in the M5 is just so much better the the CLS.

I honestly believe no matter which one you pick, you will be happy with your decision. Just make sure you drive both before you sign the check to see which is more to your liking. CLS is readily avalible for test drive and M5 can be found for a test drive too if you look hard enough. ( no dealer will turn you down for a test drive if they think you're a serious buyer.)

good luck .

As you can see there are people leaving AMG for M Its great there are cars for different personalities.
Personally I choose the M5 for driving dynamics, handling and driver involvement. BTW you can burn tires with the M5 as well

BTW stuttgarter, you have a weird personality, one day you love BMW and the other day you love MB. Weird.

Re: disatisfied M5 owner...

This is not suprising at all if you own an E55 and a track car it is kind of pointless to buy and M5 an RS6 if you are not going to well the E55.

Re: disatisfied M5 owner...

No wonder his wife likes the E55. M5 is more masculine while E55 is "softer" and more suitable for women.

Cute Yannis... real cute...

I see what he is saying too, he has a track car and doesnt need another that is all sport all the time like a BMW is in general. You always get that extra bit of luxury with Mercedes line, even though they have some high performing car, similar as to why i have my CL55.

But he does love the M5, just doesnt meet his family needs. Its cool , makes sense.

Re: disatisfied M5 owner...

Thanks for the compliment Just_Me,

Anyone that knows me gets this idea of going back and fourth between one car and another. It's not like I'm bouncing around w/ an Audi flag one week, Ferrari another, and so on and so on. I think when I first started posting here I explained this love I have specifically for both BMW and Mercedes Benz, always Porsche, and just because I change my avatar really doesn't mean a thing, i personally have a LOVE for diversity and like to switch things up every now and then... and obviously it gets others excited too! I really think something would be wrong w/ me if I stuck to one car.... cars are forever changing, so you're always going to learn or see something new you may like more than something else.
