![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | BMW M5 crashes into store in UK Car crashes into the front of busy chip shop A CAR crashed into the front of a busy fish and chip shop while several customers were inside. The BMW,driven by a man in his 30s, careered into the front window of take-away restaurant Superfish in Ashtead. The smash happened just before 8.15pm on Thursday last week when nearly a dozen customers were picking up their orders. Police officers were in the area at the time of the incident and were able to attend within two or three minutes. The 36-year-old driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol and taken to Reigate Police Station. Paul Crane, from Broadhurst, Ashtead, was later charged with this offence and has been bailed to appear at Redhill Magistrates' Court on March 2. Witnesses to the accident reported seeing the car come around the corner of Woodfield Lane. The BMW M5, worth between £50-£60,000, remained buried in the front of the shop in Woodfield Lane until Friday evening, when the road was also reopened. Jim Murphy, who owns the shop, which has been in the village for 14 years, said: "A couple of people were injured but it was nothing serious. "A few people were hit by bits of flying debris but by the time we had evacuated the shop they had wandered off and sorted themselves out." Of the 11 people in the shop and sitting in the restaurant at the time of the collision, just one person suffered injuries as a result of the accident. The woman received a head injury and was seen by ambulance staff at the scene. A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "The patient was not seriously injured and decided to make her own way to hospital. "We sent one car responder and that was on the scene for about 20 minutes." A second vehicle, a Ford Escort van, was also damaged in the collision. As the BMW had hit the dividing wall between the restaurant and the take-away area, it was feared that removing the car would cause the building to collapse. Mr Murphy said: "The car was moved at about 5pm. "They couldn't take it out before because they thought there was some structural damage. "They had to put metal supports in to hold the weight of the building and they still think there may be some damage. "We will need a new shop front and we won't be able to open for about two weeks." |
