Imo, it would be very wise to have a small department handling internet message boards and things like that. They become more and more important for creating an opinion about a certain car/brand......
You answered that q already now, so nevermind
BMW AG communication dept. (or in some BMW unit cases: contracted communication service agencies) has spider programs browsing the net - through blogs, forums, news sites etc. The spider program collects the info within different categories. The people in charge check / read the info - if relevant BMW use them - for marketing or communication (re)action.

Internet is these days heavily used for guerilla marketing purpose: spreading rumours, news, good/bad words about something. BMW use this channel very effectively to push their opinion / message along.

Yes, I'm sure BMW employees are personally posting publicly around the net, but not company / product specific info - since spiders can found them & BMW can take an action against them. When some BMW employee is willing to tell something to a stranger or unauthorized person, the info is a pure rumour made up by him or by BMW misinfo dept - which also spreads rumours inside company via BMW intranet - or something that is already official.

So, don't be fooled that some people like you-know-who are "spies".
