Had a similar problem with my 5 series after a wheel spin. It had been snowing and the gearbox got 'locked' in safe mode and woundnt change higher than gear 2. Generally its a CPU problem. Thing is, electronics seem to be one of the most expensive items to fix/change but once diagosed can be done quickly and effectively. Also it defo is something you'd have to take in to ur authorized Merc dealer.
