Wow, the TT really has a nice flat torque distribution!

Re: 335i turbo and 330i DI engine Power diagram

amazing this power curve
it is even more linear than the V10, and the torque curve, so flat
amazing
i never thought a tubroed engine could have such ccurves
any one can post comparo?

E.g. Audi 2.0 TFSI (from A4 2.0 TFSI DTM edition):

Re: 335i turbo and 330i DI engine Power diagram

Almost all forced induction engines' power diagrams look like that, more or less. It's just up to the engineers - deciding how much they increase the boost and also where it tops out - to decide what the 'plateau' will look like.

Re: 335i turbo and 330i DI engine Power diagram

snake, its not about the plateau
its about the power curve being almost perfectly linear
look at the audi one, it changes slope 3 times, and at quite disparate rev values, with the first change coming pretty late
the BMW curve is almost perfectly linear, with only one slope change at the very beginning
even the torque curve is almost perfectly flat, over a very wide range, something the Audi curve lacks

Re: 335i turbo and 330i DI engine Power diagram

But it has everything to do with the plateau.

Power is a function of torque - ie. has a linear relationship to torque. Where the plateau is, that's where the linear power curve exists, and nowhere else. Where the slope changes, that's where torque production changes.

The Audi's curve is somewhat unavoidable due to its being a 2.0L engine, whereas BMW's engine has another litre of capacity and one more turbo. This should allow the torque to be maximised earlier, and also - I'm guessing - due to its lower boost pressure higher in the rev range.

This has little to do with BMW's engine making expertise and simply the choice they made as to the type of setup.

can anybody post similar displacement engine curves
both turbo and NA? i still hold by my point, and i would love to compare

Re: 335i turbo and 330i DI engine Power diagram

Clearly, these are very light pressure or very cleverly designed turbos. 400 Nm at 1300 rpm? Unbelievable, I'm flabbergasted.

Of course it's important to understand that if the torque curve is linear then the power curve has to be linear too... since power is merely a product of torque at given rpm. So Snake is on the money.

In all though, I do feel that this is a real testament to BMW's ability as being, in my humble opinion, one of the best engine manufacturers in the world. I don't think I've ever seen such a torque output at such low rpms for an engine of this displacement and configuration. Should be a dream to drive.
