Eni was the one telling us that M was for SMG and DSG for the rest...
However, I am not trying to diss Eni at all, but his sources are wrong quite often ....

We'll see. it's just impossible for us to know what the big boys at BMW are going to do. Everything is one big secret to me, with here and there some information with a little truth in the core....

Yes, Ms are having SMG. Now. But the development goes on.

The M chiefs were saying in interviews SMG will be for M only, standard models will get other solutions - like DCT.

But you should know SMG I/II/III (AMT by Getrag) is already quite an old concept / solution. BMW are not going to stick with old technologies forever.

Getrag & BMW have recently developed an incredible wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT) - for standard E92/3 initially. I was told DCT will debute in 335si in Spring 2007.

BMW engineers are amazed by this combination: the N54 engine + DCT 436 gearbox is a perfect match. That attracts M engineers as well.

So the M engineers also decided to test the modified DCT in new M3 as well. Results are very promising. So, now they are testing SMG III and DCT in M3 - and no decision yet which gearbox will new M3 feature, but the M engineers are favouring the modified DCT.

DCT are the future of transmission. That's a fact.

But I have no idea under what name the new gearboxes will be marketed: DCT, ZSG, SMG or something else etc. But it will be a dual-clutch technology.

It can happen that new M-version of DCT will be called SMG IV.

And - shonguiz & I have different sources, and both confirmed DCT is being tested in new M3.

PS: M3 with manual is also coming.
