The E46 was considered but was dropped because of the need to do some major re-engineering and BMW did not think this would be accepted as the car would have the face of the regular E46.

The E90 facia was replaced by the E92 because of the size and depth of the compact V8. and re-engineered front suspension In a regular E90 there was two much space in the engine bay and in the front wheel wells.
that would have to have been padded out therefore increasing the front end of the car's weight distribution.

There will possiblly be a next generation M3 sedan also and possibly we could get to see the first production M3 Touring which was developed for this series the E91 like there was for the E46 and E36 , Two E91's are at M Division and one is in Munich and they can be driven.
Although BMW will again produce the F11 in M5 specification as the current car has sold well across Europe. Because it is just THE perfect car - looks , Space , Performance , Sound , luxury and Comfort.

As for the car - The E46 M3 Sedan? Sorry but I am a tradionalist and purist. It was a waste of a perfectly good car the E46 BMW M3 Coupe. Reason being the Coupe was engineered to be an M Car from the beginning , the other a perfectly good sports sedan. It is not an M3 sedan but is a hybrid of M3 parts on a E46 base.
The M3 Coupe was engineered for a purpose by the M Division. This car has not been touched by the M Division. Therefore does not contain the magic that makes the Coupe stand out.

Knowing how all fellow GCZ'ers love the OEM look I figured this would be more appreciated here and this one is by far the best example of what an E46 M3 sedan would have looked like had BMW made one.
Loving the OEM look is great an all, but not if something was sacrificed for no good reason than some lame attempt at "being original" by being like the 100th guy to do that thing. Not knocking on you posting this or anything, just at the dude and some people who think that he has done something amazing or something.

A little OT, but the most amazing thing I've seen done by someone is the guy who built the "Tumbler" in his garage and it's pretty much spot on.

Does this mean that the effect of the horrid platform sharing will not effect the work of M as much as some fear?

Since E46 chassis/profile and interior looked way better! BMW must have realized that and could not admit it publicly, hence bring back some of design elements to newer models, e.g. F10 for example. I still remember back in 2008 (that's two years after E90 was released) at BMW booth in auto show, BMW displayed a few pre-owned (like-new) E46 sedan and coupe next to brand new E90/E92. There were many show visitors gathered around E46 sedan and asked BMW rep if the car was for sale, a few of them even asked if that's a new 3er model!

The M3 Coupe was engineered for a purpose by the M Division. This car has not been touched by the M Division. It does not have ///M genes such as a high revving engine, nor does it have a manual or sequential transmission, no 50/50 weight distribution nor RWD with LSD. It has just been slapped with M badges therefore does not contain the magic that makes it stand out.
