BMW had a great opportunity to simplify the look and retain the original aesthetic concept by merely keeping the two top half lenses the same, clear colour. I've seen many aftermarket cluster on current 3ers and they look fantastic.

This new cluster is hideous hotch-potch of discordant angles and intersections in monotone red. Looks like someone slapped two fresh tee-bone steaks on the backside. But, in all, let's face it: BMW don't have an auspicious track record when it comes to tail-light design.
When the first pictures of the E90 were leaked I remember myself commenting that the guy who designed the rear lights should be shot. Later on I got used to them but never really became a fan.

At first I also thought the optional Shadow line/Black line(?) rear ligths that I think you're referring to looked better until I realised how they destroy the obvious reference to BMW's traditional L-shape of the rear lights. IMO as a result the rear end loses some of its personality and becomes too anonymous, not really instatly recognizable as a BMW.

This is what I'm talking about:

Anyway, the E90's rear lights were a compromise made at the last moment and it really shows. They never were very well adapted to the rest of the car. They should've just used the original ones:

Nevertheless I think the new ones with the LEDs + LED stripes are a great improvement and IMO the best-looking of all these versions. They are very similar to other BMW rear lights, make the E90 rear easily recognizable as BMW, they have the L-shape and they look more integrated to the overall design.

I still think the original ones are the best, BMW clearly lacked balls.

LOL That could've worked as well. Updated with the LEDs naturally.

Re: AutoExpress - BMW 330d Saloon

I like the new rearlights and the shape is better than the prefacelift but I like the old ones too. My dad like his E90 and the rearlights and he wont trade to the facelift version becuase it would just be a waste money.
