My E70 X5 4.8i that is 9 months has had the following problems:
  1. Faulty Front wheel bearing back that had to be replaced
  2. Rattles from the rear passenger side
  3. Crazy iDrive system that seems to have a mind of his own.
My good friend had his air conditioning vent system of E70 X5 3.0i replaced after 3 months of ownership.
Another person that I know has the E70 3.0i brake fluid system completely crapped out on him.

I know the Z4 hasn't had many problems, as well as the previous Z3.

Sorry to bust the party, but it was only considered very lightly. Not going to happen anytime soon.

And you would know??? This is BMW's bread and butter car in it's BIGGEST market. I am sure they will do whatever they can to mitigate the possibility of a huge sales slump for this cash cow we call the 3 series.

Agree completely....and with good paying manufacturing jobs disappearing
across the US it would be a shot in the arm for the economy of wherever BMW would expand or locate a new plant.
The possibility seems mutually beneficial for everyone involved.

The reliability factor mentioned earlier....as if America lacks skilled and dedicated workers.... is condescending and inaccurate.
I owned a Z4 for 4 years- not one problem associated with build quality. And among other Z4 owners I've talked with no one ever complained to me about things shaking loose or installed incorrectly.
No car or plant turns out 100% perfect automobiles....but in my experience the Z4 comes pretty close to being bulletproof.

Very, very well said.Like it or not...the world is getting smaller. It cuts both ways...jobs being exported out of the US to other countries and job's being imported into the US (German companies building cars in the US).The impact of the BMW Plant in this Region...I will define as 3 or 4 states is almost beyond description.4,700+/- direct jobs at the Plant and approx 14,000 supplier jobs.A university auto research center...the list could go for miles. Thanks! I am just stating my experience and those of other X5 owners. The reliability problems could be related to the proficiency of the workers or it could be a process thing, or training- I honestly don't care, it gives the brand a poor image.
The fact of the matter is, I and some of my friends are not too pleased with the reliability of the new X5.
You can call that condescending, I call it being blunt.

Re: BMW considering U.S. production for 3er

Why is it the workers on the assembly line?

Could it be problems that rest more with the engineering of the car...even simple compatibilities of one piece fitting and in alignment next to another, or early fatigue in parts that are breaking down?

If I'm not mistaken the Z4 is made on the same assembly line. Why would one model have assembly problems and not the other?

Common sense, among other things, point to some other problem rather than scapegoating American workers.

Happy Labor Day.

I'm probably pegged as a mouthpiece for BMW.I'm not.I've criticized BMW when I've felt it necessary.I've got an X3 that has the transmission problem...taken it in for patches...still not fixed.Completely unacceptable from a company like BMW.I roll w/ the punches. The rest of the car I like very much.I'll probably pick up a Hybrid X6 or the PAS which really intrigues me...or maybe the X4, if it makes it through to production.I like the lineup rolling out from BMW.My point is:I've owned a recent Cadillac,Infiniti, and Audi.Right or wrong, there has been things wrong w/ every one of those cars. Not major things...but things that should be right...right off the assembly line.I guess I've been dumbed down...I just don't expect flawless products from any car manufacturer esp in the $100k and below pricepoint.A handbuilt $300k Ferrari,my expectations on build quality would be higher. That is just the way I see auto manufacturing today. Thanks! Happy Labor Day to you too.

Like I mentioned, whatever the problem is, it ought to be addressed.
