| AutoWeek - 2008 BMW M3 Sedan (short drive) -

OUR TAKE: It was a wise decision by BMW to bring back the M3 sedan because there certainly is a market for potent sedans. Sticking with just a coupe and convertible lineup, as with the last-generation M3, shuts out a lot of prospective buyers.
Not surprisingly, the sedan performs brilliantly. It's only 22 pounds heavier than the coupe and packs the same thrills, but just with a couple of extra doors and an actual, usable backseat. Oh, and it doesn't have the carbon-fiber roof panel, either. Bummer.
The high-revving V8 is a work of art with a redline way up in the 8000-rpm stratosphere, with more power and throttle response than you will ever need in a road-going car. Grabbing gears in the sweet six-speed manual is done with ease. Thankfully, we don't have to deal with that horror that is the SMG transmission anymore, but we do look forward to the double clutch box. If BMW's unit performs as well as the Nissan GT-R's, than we are in for a treat.
All car companies should strive to match BMW's steering response and feel, and its suspensions are second to none. The car stays flat and composed when tackling corners, and the car is easily steered around a turn with the throttle, too.
Between this, the Lexus IS-F, Audi RS4 and Cadillac CTS-V, there are tons of great high-performance sedans from which to choose now. As-tested price: $64,450
