Yes ...
M3 does not shock as much as C63 does, or RS4 did - since both latest cars made a quantum leap from previous generations, and therefore been more cherished & been raved about.
While E46 M3 was already a superb car, so expectations about M3 were a bit too high, I guess. What did everybody expect? A perfect car? Oh, c'mon ...
M3 is definitely not a bad car.
Yet just the article said: it's a shame M3 is now more about brand name, and not so much about the product. Yes, there is plenty alternatives out there. Yes, in some categories C63 & RS4 surpass E9x M3. Perhaps even IS-F will. That doesn't make M3 bad - but the competitors finally managed to catch the train.
But I'm sure that will definitely not hurt M3 image, and even less its sales. M3 will still be the most successful model in its segment - despite sharper competition. Maybe even more successful - since it's even more marketing (and less engineering) driven than any other M3 ever. M3 brand is a very powerful brand name. M3 CSL will put a cherry on a top.
But the customers are the real winners here: having many choices to pick from. To pick the best fit. M3, M3 CSL, RS4, RS5, C63, CLK63, IS-F, etc.
