didnt the M dude say that lowering consumption was a key thing..
many have complained about this amazingly thirsty engine..
i guess mission failed then..

PS
Ive heard that the M V10´s are super thirsty as well

i know its not a biggie in this market but still..

they are thirsty but not more than a E63. Its the tanksize which is the problem. Its too small for a performance car like a V10.

Re: Autocar: M3 testdrive report

Comments from Steve Sutcliffe's blog from myautocar.com on his drive of the new E92 M3:

Quote:
Friday Jul 06, 2007 05:43 PM

Even BMW gets things wrong

Drove the new M3 earlier this week and, shock horror, came away with both socks still firmly attached to my feet. Which was not what I was expecting at all.

You can read more about why and how on Wednesday in the mag, or read the first drive here, but for the time being you’ll just have to believe me when I say that the new M3 ain’t quite the car it used to be.

To be perfectly honest we’re not talking about a bad car here in any shape or form, merely one that we’d expected to be 110 per cent sensational but which, in the event, scores only a surprisingly low 8.8 out of 10 on the all-time scale of car genius. It’s really only the fact that it isn’t the be-all and end-all that’s so surprising.

Except for one thing; the car’s fuel consumption. I don’t want to spoil your fun and tell you too much about the M3’s thumping new V8 engine which, by the way, revs to 8400rpm. But what I can tell you is that it eats fuel faster than the starving man. As in 14mpg when your trying quite hard but not being ridiculous, 12mpg when you are, and rarely better than 19mpg when you’re just bumbling.

That’s borderline absurd living in the era in which we do. But it proves that even BMW can get things wrong every once in a while.

A glance around the corner

The Steved's reply to Sutcliffe's comments:

Quote:
Steve Sutcliffe has posted some further thoughts on his Blog and here are my thoughts in response;

http://www.myautocar.com/community/b...og&sblogId=c4M

Sutcliffe's blog is much more telling than the published article. Bear in mind we only got back from the test on Wednesday (I travelled back on the same plane as Sutcliffe) and its all been a bit of a frenzy to post up a quick review.

I have said earlier on in my posts that we (i.e. EVO) were a little dissapointed initially, not because there was anything wrong with the car but because in several areas it met rather than exceeded our expectations.

It was only a few days later that we reflected on what else BMW could have done to exceed them. Not a lot really, the only area where they may have underperformed is the brakes, but even then I'd like to drive a UK spec car over familiar routes to draw a proper judgement. The brakes on the E92 M3 are massive compared with the E46 M3, so BMW haven't been slacking in terms of adding braking performance, my issue is more with their dogged approach to following the sliding caliper route.

The E92 M3 handles and steers as well as the E46, in many ways better since steering was never an E46 strong suit and it had too much body roll and intertia in the turns. But ultimately the E92 M3 is just an evolution on dynamically from the E46 M3, in much the same way that an E92 330i is from an E46 330i. Better but not considerably so. Engine wise it's streets ahead of the E46, BMW have developed a real corker.

Sutcliffe's other comment about economy also has some truth, we managed 11mpg, but none of us was ever driving it gently enough to get a true sense of its thirst in daily use. And that means neither EVO, nor Autocar, nor CAR really know the answer to that yet.

So I ask the doubters is the problem that BMW failed to stun us in every measurable area? Or do we just have expectations that are unrealistic? What would another few levels up from the E46 'feel like'? And perhaps that level would only be possible if the car weighed 200kg lighter. So, did BMW build a 1655kg car because they were lazy or because we asked them to? Think about that. I did, and after an initial dissapointment I began to conclude that they'd actually done a pretty good job.
Looks like initial disapointment with the E92 M3 is only natural.

Re: Autocar: M3 testdrive report

Well that is his opinion.Honestly no one cares what Steved thinks. He likes the M3 then so be it.Why try to convince anyone?
If it was upto Autocar's expection they would have praised it to no ends.Sutcliffe is a former touring car driver and is good enough to judge the M3.

I care what Steved thinks... because he drove the car just like Sutcliffe drove the car. What suddenly makes Sutcliffe so much more important than Steved? Absolutely nothing in my opinion, because the more opinions of the car from people who have actually driven it, gives a better idea of what the car is actually like.

If you want to hang on every word of what Autocar has to say and not consider what other people have to say, then be may guest. It'll only be you who is more ignorant for it.

I care what he thinks, in fact I believe in all those who actually driven the new M3. What I dont believe are those who havent driven the new M3.

Steved opinion is his own.Has anyone said his opinion is wrong.I dont remember saying anything like that.
Also what makes Steved's opinion more accurate than others? That is how it is being shown here for each and every critical review Steved has a reply,Why?
