It's part of the exhaust treatment. They developped a new exhaust system that's supposed to be green. This additional tube is here to enhance the effectiveness of the test by putting the exhaust gaz just in the face of the pedestrians.

It's an IRL test of the system:

they drive slowly in the downtown, and if the people around the car turn green and fall to the ground making weird noises, it means the system is not working. If they turn green and start to cough insanely, it's not very effective. If they look disgusted, it still stinks. If they laugh and show the car with their fingers, the system is perfectly effective. (NB: a mask is part of this equipment.)

The second phase of the test is that they drive back where they were. If the place is filled with emergency vehicles, they disappear quickly and write in the report that the system is rubbish. If not, they can go back home and remove their masks.

Third and last phase, they watch the news. if it is spoken about a mysterious and deadly polluting agent who destroyed peoples' lungs, the system will be removed with a STIHL and its engineers will have to eat it without ketchup. If not, BMW will sell the car like that and Bangle will use very long and impressive words to explain how good it looks.

As you can see in the last pic (which I am not going to quote anymore ) it is testing the emmission values of the exhaust gasses. And you don't want equipment that expensive to hang 5 cm above the ground.
Imagine what this system would look like on a 335i, its like BMW meets Peterbilt !

Anyway the new rear lights look very good IMO, specially the shape. I do agree a little more white would not harm, now with the leds they can make the glasses any colour they wan't so who not? (but I am sure it will fit montegoblue very good )

So Now that we've reached 50pages in this thread, can someone be so kind as to give a quick recap of what changes the F/L 3er will have?

Correct me if I am wrong but as far as I know this will be it:

New grill (like the coupé)
Newly shaped front bumper
The engine cover would have a slighthly new shape
The taillights will be different concerning shape and colour.
Headlights don't really look changed
Interior upgrades (but I can't really remember having seen interior pics nor specs)
Some new wheels (see the small pic on page 49)

Please feel free to complete or correct when required!

- new bumpers (back and front)
- new grille
- new backlights, and different graphics
- new iDrive (like in F01 7er)
- new bonnet
- new rims
- updated engines (I think, maybe 323d???, updated 4 cylinders)
- updated interior (I think, for sure the new gearlever for automatics)

It's very likely to have drivetrain tuning too, bit more comfort, bit more nimble... And is said to have a better finition and some new materials in the interior, too. Maybe a couple of new options..
